I hope your summer is going well.  It seems that everyone is suffering with the heat if they don’t have air conditioning.  But I’m sure we would give our eyeteeth for some of this heat come wintertime.

There will be a special Family Night at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on Wednesday, August 24th at 6 PM for Potluck Supper and then a program with Jasen With An “E” at 7 PM.  Jasen, age 25, is from Duluth and has been singing and writing his own songs since he was in 9th Grade.  Come and enjoy this funny, talented young artist.

The End of Summer Regular Meeting of the Sno-Gophers will meet at the clubhouse at 6 PM on August 20th.  Visitors are always welcome.  They will also be planning for the Harvest Fest Bingo on September 9th.

There’s something new at the Carlton County Fair this year.  They will be opening the gates at 1PM on Thursday the 18th instead of the usual 5 PM time.  This is to help with parking, etc.  Some of the special events during the fair are free entertainment under the Big Top.  Thursday includes Jason the Juggler at 2 PM, Ovation at 3PM, and 4-H Night at 7 PM.  Then on Friday, starting at 11 AM is the One Man Band, Senior Day where this year’s Carlton County Senior Citizen’s of the year are honored at noon and the Century Farms, Colleen Myhre at 1 PM, Pedal Tractor Pull at 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM, and a Senior Dance at 6 PM featuring Loren Lindevig.

The Carlton County Retired Educators will again be volunteering at the Little Red Schoolhouse.  Please stop by there and have a visit with some of our former teachers.

Look around in area businesses for a full schedule of events at the fair.

Congratulations to Lonnie Bradford on his recent graduation from College. He was honored with a party on July 31st at his mother’s home.

Our sympathy is extended to the Lally Family on the recent death of their long-time pet dog, Isaac.  Isaac has been failing lately, but was holding his own when a truck accidentally hit him on Hwy 73 on Sunday night.  It is never easy to lose a pet, and we hope that the Lally’s can take comfort in the fact that they took such good care of Isaac for all these years.  I guess the dog was actually Annie’s dog, but a family member’s pet usually becomes everyone’s pet.

I see in the Floodwood Forum that there will be a special Seminar for Parents put on free of charge for the parents of Floodwood Students.  This Seminar is being taught by Corwin Kronenberg.  Corwin is a parent, teacher, author, and a highly sought after expert and speaker in the area of self-concept and discipline. This will take place on August 25th 8:30AM - 3 PM. I have attended several of these seminars taught by Corwin and I highly encourage you to attend.  Your day will go by fast and you will come home with lots of down-to-earth ideas to use with your children.  Please register by calling the school.  Others can attend by paying the $100.00 fee, which includes breakfast and lunch.

This community said their final good-byes to long time resident, Eunice Lowry on Friday, July 29th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright.  Eunice died at age 96 and had spent the last several years at the nursing home in Cloquet.  Her son, Dennis and family were here, but unfortunately, daughter Kathleen was unable to attend due to poor health.  She was hospitalized on the West Coast after failing an EKG and Stress Test.  Her Doctor did not allow her to come back for the funeral. Kathleen had just been here 4 weeks ago and spent several days with her mother, though.

Thank you to Dave Walli for leading worship services at Bethlehem and Bethany on July 31 so Pastor Matt could go on a trip with his son, Tony.

Yvonne Peterson would like to thank everyone for the prayers, gifts and cards after her recent surgery.  She is now home and doing well.

The Farmer’s Co-op Store Annual Meeting has been changed to August 18th at 7 PM at the Senior Center in Wright.  Everyone is welcome to attend. There is a Thursday night Bible Study at St. John’s at 7 PM.  They are studying the Theory of Evolution at this time and for the next several weeks.  Please try to attend.

How has your summer been going?  For most people it goes too fast, but for me, it gets long.  I guess it’s because I’m usually so busy with the Grandchildren and they are a lot of work, but they are also a lot of fun. Now we are looking forward to the County Fair and all the Back-to-School activities.  I have already helped one of the grandchildren buy all her school supplies.  Now, I only have 3 more grandkids to go.  It seems that each year the list of supplies from the school gets longer and longer.  I remember going to school with just a few pencils and some tablet paper.  Now the kids need pencils, paper, folders, erasers, glue sticks, glue, colored pencils, 3-ring binders, backpacks, dry-erase markers, red pens, tissue, non-electric pencil sharpeners, rulers, markers, calculators, scissors, tape, crayons, gym shoes, etc.  So after buying all these things, the little gal sure was happy and ready for school.  So I guess it’s all worth it in the end.

Over 25 area folks attended the annual Carlton County Volunteer Recognition Dinner at St. Matthew’s Church in Esko on July 26th.  We were all treated to a delicious meal, entertainment, and door prizes.

The following paragraph is a correction from last week’s column.  It should have read Dennis Dorman, not Dennis Lowry.  Sorry for the mistake Dennis! But, this goes to prove, that I write the “Wright News” and the “Wrong News” at times!

Dennis Dorman has been selected for induction into the Portville Central School Hall of Fame!  The Induction Ceremony took place on July 9th, 2005 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olean, New York.  Congratulations, Dennis, on this most prestigious award!

I suppose if Dennis Lowry read this, he is wondering where his award is. School starts in Cromwell on September 1st this year.  This is a little early, but then the school gets a head start on the schedule.  So the kids will have a two-day week, a three-day weekend, and then a four-day week. This should make the beginning of the year pretty easy to get used to.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Eunice Lowry who died on Sunday, July 24th in St. Luke’s Hospital.  She had recently fallen out of bed and broke her hip.  She had hip surgery and then died a day or two later.  Eunice was one of the pioneers in Wright, living to the age of 96. She spent the last 4 or 5 years in the Cloquet Nursing Home.  Her funeral was held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright on Friday, July 30th, with David Walli Officiating.

Vacation Bible School will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell, August 8 - 12, 9 to noon.  All children age 4 to 6th Grade are welcome to attend.  Helpers and teachers are still encouraged to come forward to help. Call Julie Hedin or Lynn Odegaard if you can help, even it’s only for a day or two.

Congratulations to Betty Isaacson on her recent retirement from Super One. A party was held in her honor on July 23rd.  Betty is a former Cromwellian.

I really enjoyed my time with the members of the Tamarack Presbyterian Church on July 3rd and 24th.  I led their church worship services and it is always good to see those folks again.

I will be going to Kettle River and Sturgeon Lake on August 21st to lead their church services.  It will be great to get meet a whole new group of people.

I see in the paper that it was a year ago that Ray Kirzy died.  Where does the time go?

There will be a Family Night in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on August 24th.  There will be a “Potluck Supper” at 6 PM and a program featuring Jasen with an “E” at 7 PM.  Jasen is from Duluth and has been singing and writing his won songs since he was in 9th Grade. (1995) Come and enjoy this funny, and talented young artist.

I had a chance to meet and visit with Duane and Phyllis (Borglund) Huseby of North Richland Hill, Texas, at Wrong Days in Wright.  They are a very wonderful and interesting couple.

Please try to attend Bob Schultz’ Retirement at the State Garage (behind the Savanna Restaurant) in Floodwood on August 8th at noon.

There sure were a lot of drawing prizes at Wrong Days this year.  I was a lucky winner of some of them, and I also picked up several prizes for those who were unable to stick around to pick them up.  It is so great of these businesses to support our community events.  So, if you won a prize, maybe you could send them a “Thank You” note.  I know it would really be appreciated.

Speaking of Wrong Days, please pick up your dish or pan at the Co-op Store from the smorgasbord.  There are at least 6 - 8 pans left there.

The Farmer’s Co-op Store in Wright will hold their Annual Meeting at the Senior Center in Wright on, Thursday, August 11, at 7 PM.

Monday, July 25th was a very special for our family.  First of all, my grand daughter went fishing with her Grandpa Bob and came home with a 10 LB, 38 inch Northern.  Since Tayiah is only 7 years old, this sure was exciting for her.

Then later that same day, our son Curtis’ diploma from the Hawai’i Pacific University came in the mail.  He has earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Degree.  He graduated, Cum Laude, on May 18, 2005.  We did not go to his graduation, so sure was great to get the diploma in the mail. He will now continue to go for his Master’s majoring in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Curtis is now on a road trip out west and will also be home for the week of September 4 - 11th.  It will be great to see him again.
