There will be a Sloppy Joe Benefit Supper and Bake Sale for Monty Pearson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wright on Saturday, February 19th serving 4 - 7 PM. Monty lost his home to fire around Christmas time.
A Grand Opening was held at the new Members Community Credit Union in McGregor during the week of January 31- February 4th. Members and guests were treated to a tour of the new building, refreshments and a gift jar of chokecherry jelly made by the local Minnestalgia Products Company. The new facility will provide members with many benefits for many years to come. It is always nice to see improvements in the surrounding communities as it will also reflect on our local community as well.
Art Jauss is home from the hospital after having a scare last week. He had blockage in his intestines and had to have that taken care of. There were some pretty scary moments, but now he is on the mend. It’s great to have him home again.
Kaylyn Messer of Cromwell has been named to the Winona State University Dean’s List for the fall semester of 2004. Good Job!
The ladies of the Villa Vista are in need of red hats for their Red Hat Society that they have recently formed. If you have a red hat that you could donate, please drop it off at the Villa. I’m sure they would really appreciate it.
Ailie Mikkola has been a resident of the Villa Vista since September of 2001 and last week she died there at the ripe old age of 98 and 1/2. She died on January 25, 2005 and leaves a wonderful family. I can remember spending countless hours at the Mikkola home during my years in high school. Ailie’s daughter, the late Andrea Mikkola, was in my class and we were “Best Friends” for many years. We would enjoy the many wonderful meals and lunches that Ailie would always have in her large farm kitchen. Guests were always welcome in her home. I especially remember the wood range and the Cromwell Toast. Ailie will be missed by her daughters, Aurelia (George) Hemmila, Adelia (Seppo) Lipponen, and Ann (E. Wesley) Heikkila, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Ellen Mikkola. Ailie’s funeral was held at the Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet on February 2, 2005.
Last week the After School Program held a Trivia Contest for all kids attending. There were 12 rounds and the results were 1st Place: Hannah Shelton, 6th grade, 2nd Place: Matthew Holm, Kindergarten, 3rd Place: Lisa Peterson, 6th grade, 4th Place: Haley Shelton, 6th grade, 5th Place: Mandy Egge, 4th grade, and 6th Place: Brett Burggraff, 2nd Grade. The kids seemed to have a great time and it was amazing how much they knew about general information. Parents and teachers must be doing a good job teaching our kids.
The Mary/Martha Society of St. John’s in Wright held their regular meeting on February 3rd at the church.
On Monday, January 31st, I picked up Mona Goranson in Cloquet and we went out for supper and then on to Carlton to watch Robin Lake and the Lady Mercs play basketball. The Mercs won the game. We also sat and visited with Sharon and David Lake.
Speaking of Basketball, there aren’t very many games left for the Cromwell teams either. The boys play games at home on the 8th, 11th, and 22nd. The Gals play Floodwood at home on the 10th, Albrook at home on the 14th and at McGregor on the 17th.
Ash Wednesday is early this year. It is on February 9th so Lent begins that day. Services are planned in the Cromwell/Wright communities for the following Wednesdays until Easter. The real cold weather is now on its way. Yes, we have had a lot of cold weather already, but now we are really going to get it. But, by the time you read this it may have already come and gone, at least that’s what I hope will happen. Now, as the days are getting longer, the warmer weather shouldn’t be far behind. We are lucky that we aren’t getting some of the terrible weather that other parts of the country and the world are getting. Our prayers are with the people who are suffering from these weather-related tragedies.
The next dance at the Cromwell Park Pavilion will be held on January 27th from 1 - 4 PM. The dances will continue on the 4th Thursday of the month for the rest of the year.
There were many people out to the Cromwell Pavilion on the 11th for the Sam Cook presentation. Sam showed slides of some of his many adventures and everyone seems to really enjoy his show. Thanks for coming, Sam!
Congratulations to Lincoln and Jeanne Hansen on the recent celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Confirmation at the Bethlehem/Bethany Lutheran Church has been moved back to Wednesdays after school at Bethany. If you have young people interested in getting confirmed, please contact Pastor Matt at the church.
The ALPHA Course will again be offered at Bethany Lutheran Church starting on January 23rd at 6 PM. ALPHA is a 10-session course in the basics of Christianity. Plan to come for a delicious dinner and then the course will be explained and you will receive information so you can decide about continuing the course. Call Pastor Matt or Jeanne Oman is you are planning on coming to the introduction dinner.
Seth and Trent Mowers and Robbie Larson visited the After School Program on December 21st, 2004 while they were home on leave. The kids had been corresponding with the boys monthly and were very excited about their visit.
They have been stationed in Texas and are preparing to leave for Iraq. The soldiers spent an hour and a half with the kids, answering questions, passing out treats, playing foosball and showing pictures of their training.
The kids had many, many questions and the guys patiently answered everyone. The ASP kids will continue to write to the guys and want to thank them very much for spending time with them and for all they are doing for their future. Thanks Guys!
The After School Program would like to thank the Goutermont family for the Foosball table they recently donated. The kids sure seem to be enjoying it. Other people and organizations who have donated to the ASP are the Collman Family, Heather Switzer, Geri Pfisthner, Jane Heikkila, the Kolodge Family, Ann Johnson, the Koenig Family, Missy Lind, Laurie Sulkowski, the Warpula Family, Claudia Thomas, the Randall Family and the YOT of Cromwell. A big thank you goes out to all of these people, as the ASP would not be possible without the support of the community. They are also in need of the following items: dry erase markers, 100% juice, nylons for craft projects, peanut butter jar lids for craft projects and any games, puzzles, Lincoln logs, craft supplies, etc.
The Cub Scouts will hold their Pack Meeting on January 20th at 6 - 7 PM at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. The new Cub Scout Master is Greg Eliason.
Eleanor Spicer is now living in Texas and writes that she is doing well and enjoying her new life there. She has made several trips to Padre Island and Mexico and plans to go to Sun Lakes, Arizona in February.
Former Pastor Jim and Julie Gronbeck also send word that they are doing well and are very busy with their children’s school activities. Matthew is a freshman at North Dakota State University majoring in engineering. He also was working in a restaurant as head cook this past summer in Graystone.
Andrea is a junior at Battle Lake and is involved in everything. Kristen is in the 8th grade and loves band, choir, speech, and sports. Julie is working as a Title I teacher and also with ESL students.
The Cub Scouts went to Duluth on Saturday the 8th for the UMD Hockey game. The Bulldogs lost, but the kids and parents seemed to have a great time anyway.
I just received word that long time resident of Cromwell, Sally Parviainen passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2005. She had been in poor health for the past year and now is at rest. Her memorial service is planned for April 16, 2005. I’ll try to put more details in the paper when I find them out.
Marilyn Schultz celebrated another birthday on January 8th. She was honored with a pancake breakfast at my home on her birthday.
Well, that’s about all the news from Lake Bundleupthoselittleones , stay warm and cozy and Hello to all the area snowmobilers.
