Wright – Cromwell News by Jennie K. Hanson 357-2385 October 20, 2008
Well, it happened! I voted already! That is kind of unfair you may say, but the folks in Beseman Township got their Presidential ballots in the mail last week and we had the opportunity to vote early, but NOT often as is sometimes said. Of course, those votes will not be counted until Election Day on November 4th, but it is great to have the ballot ahead of time so we can really make good choices and not have time constraints hampering our decisions at the polls. I haven’t missed voting in a Presidential election since I was old enough to vote. Oh, yes, that was back in the 1900’s. So I guess I have voted for the past 10 or 11 presidents. And speaking of that, I got a call the other day and the person was wondering about Presidential succession, so I went to the computer and found out some interesting information. Here it is:
Current Presidential line of succession, as specified by the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 (3 U.S.C. § 19). October 2008
| # | Office | Current Officer |
| 1 | Vice President and President of the Senate | Dick Cheney |
| 2 | Speaker of the House of Representatives | Nancy Pelosi |
| 3 | President pro tempore of the Senate | Robert Byrd |
| 4 | Secretary of State | Condoleezza Rice |
| 5 | Secretary of the Treasury | Henry Paulson |
| 6 | Secretary of Defense | Robert Gates |
| 7 | Attorney General | Michael Mukasey |
| 8 | Secretary of the Interior | Dirk Kempthorne |
| 9 | Secretary of Agriculture | Ed Schafer |
| — | Secretary of Commerce | Carlos Gutierrez (non-natural)† |
| — | Secretary of Labor | Elaine Chao (non-natural)† |
| 10 | Secretary of Health and Human Services | Mike Leavitt |
| 11 | Secretary of Housing and Urban Development | Steve Preston |
| 12 | Secretary of Transportation | Mary Peters |
| 13 | Secretary of Energy | Samuel Bodman |
| 14 | Secretary of Education | Margaret Spellings |
| 15 | Secretary of Veterans Affairs | James Peake |
| 16 | Secretary of Homeland Security | Michael Chertoff |
Just thought this information would be of interest to others, too. Since Carlos Gutierrez and Elaine Chao are not natural born citizens, they cannot become president, so that is why there is no number before their names.
So, I’d like to encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote on November 4th and remember that there are some local elections to think about, too, such as school board, etc.

After subbing for 5 days in a row, I came down with a cold. I guess it’s just that time of year when colds are going around and someone decided to share theirs with me. Anyway, it should pass soon.
Former resident, Jessie Houck, now of Roseville, MN, was honored with a 90th birthday party on Saturday, September 20th at the Roseville Covenant Church in Roseville. The celebration was planned by her children. Approximately 120 people were in attendance, including many friends and relatives from the northland. Former pastors, Walter Berg of Moose Lake, Alden Keiski and David Chanski were on hand to help celebrate this important milestone. A delicious lunch (as Jessie relates) was served and there was a short program. Wishes are extended for many more wonderful years to come!!

I just got a call from Gayle Nieman and we had a great visit. She said that her and Ed had just returned from a trip out east and while in Boston, they met for lunch with Lindsay Lally at Quincy Market. Lindsay and her sisters and a couple of other gals were in Boston visiting Derek Nyberg for the long weekend. The Nieman’s were on a 12 day bus trip of the East coast.
The kids at Cromwell Wright school had a special event on Wednesday, October 15th. To celebrate Teen Read Week, they had a special 3 hour extended Open Library right before the football game against Nevis. They wore costumes, had scavenger hunts, trivia contests, prizes, book giveaways, Twilight movie passes and ice cream sundaes. In order to be in the drawing, they had to check out a book during that week. Sounds like everyone had a great time!

I was looking up information on Alaska’s Governor Sarah Palin and found the names of her children to be very interesting. They are named Track, Willow, Bristol, Piper and Trig. Her husband is Todd. Whether you like these names or not, they certainly are interesting.
There will be NO HUNTER’S SUPPER in Tamarack this year. The time has come to let it go. Sorry to all the hunter’s who will be expecting a good hot meal after a long day in the woods on opening weekend, but it can’t be helped. It has just gotten to be too much work for too few workers.
There will be a Harvest/Halloween CASH BINGO Night at the Wright Senior Center on, Saturday, October 25th from 7 to 9 PM. Come - Enjoy - Win with coffee, cider, and treats.

Mark and Linda Dahlman’s home was a buzz with activity over the weekend as their granddaughters celebrated their 1st birthdays together. Kieriahna Goodin, daughter of Luc and Suzy and Alexis Obando, daughter of Rozzie and Fabio were both born a week apart in October so they celebrated together on Sunday October 12th. Their actual birthdays are later in the month. Alexis’ grandmother, Uncle and cousin from Costa Rica were also there to help celebrate her special day. Several other friends and relatives also attended.
Helen Korpela celebrated her 90th birthday at a party given by her family at the Cromwell Pavilion on Saturday, October 11, 2008. A nice crowd joined her in celebrating and enjoyed that and the lunch. Someone read a poem he wrote in tribute to Helen… Congratulations Helen on making it to this milestone Birthday.
The Women of Bethany Lutheran have hung up their aprons, spatula’s, pots and pans after 76 years of hosting the Annual Hunter’s Supper. This event was widely known and drew as many as 700 attendees. In it’s place this year will be a benefit dinner for Angel Holm who died recently from Leukemia. The community wants to thank all the hard workers who provided so many with this wonderful supper for so many years. Maybe it can be revived in the future.
Here’s a little riddle to end my column with this week: “What is it when you give it, you also keep it?” Answer: Your word, of course. I was taught from a very young age that if you say you will do something, do it! If you can’t do it, tell the person asking right away so they won’t expect you to do something and then be disappointed when you don’t do it. Remember: Trust is a Must!
Have a great week from Lake Leavesfallingfastnow and Hello to all the family and friends of Jessie Houck!
