Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson August 31, 2005
As I sit down to right the news this week it is with a ton of mixed emotions. I’ve been watching the coverage of the hurricane in Louisiana and can’t even imagine the problems that those people must be going through. How will all those homeless people rebuild their lives? It seems a sign of the end times. We must all pray for them and do whatever we can to help out. The Red Cross will certainly need millions of dollars to help these people.
The weather forecasters tell us that the hurricane is bringing us our wonderful weather here in our area. How can a hurricane bring so much damage and also nice weather in other parts of the country? I almost feel guilty enjoying the nice weather here.
But life must go on and will go on as long as there are people and the will to live.
There are many, many of our young people heading off to colleges this week.
Then there will be hundreds of our kids heading to school this week, also.
Cromwell -Wright school opened its doors on September 1st with their regular schedule of events.
The first home football game will be held on Friday, September 9th at 7 PM. This is also the weekend of Cromwell’s Harvest Fest, so go to the Steak Fry and then go to the game afterwards. There will also be all the regular schedule of events on the 10th and 11th.
Wayne Thom will be starting the MN Certified Trapping Education classes at his home beginning September 11, 2005 at 1 PM. Classes will run for 5 Sundays. Also, this year there will be a class just for girls. The first class will be Co-ed.
The MN Legislature enacted the following law this year: “Effective March 1, 2007, a person born after December 31, 1989, who has not been issued a trapping license in the previous license year, may not obtain a trapping license without a trapper education certificate. The Minnesota Trappers Association will conduct trapper education courses statewide, free of charge to participants, and issue certificates that satisfy this new trapping license requirement.” For more information and to register for the classes, call Wayne Thom at 218-644-3593.
The next meeting of the Carlton County Retired Educators (CCRE) will be at 3676 Music Camp Road, Hanging Horn Village on Little Hanging Horn Lake near Barnum, MN on Tuesday, September 13th at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM. The gathering will include a French Cooked meal by Sue Jordan who was the first female student at the famous Maxine’s Restaurant in Paris, France. This will be followed by a tour of the grounds and a short business meeting. Reservations are needed, so please call me at 357-2385 or Diane Lindstrom at 879-2528. We will send you directions if needed.
And speaking of the Carlton County Retired Educators, we manned (and womaned) the Little Red Schoolhouse at the County Fair over the August 18 - 21st weekend. We had hundreds of visitor’s come through the door and even had folks from Paris, France and Alaska. A few asked about the history of the schoolhouse. Well, that building was originally the Big Lake (Hanging Horn) Community Church on South County Road # 13 and Portage Road. It was built in 1925. It was a non-denominational church and community center dissolving in 1956 after which it was moved to the fair grounds.
The building restoration was made possible by the Carlton County Historical Society, the Retired Teachers of Carlton County and the Carlton County Fair Board. School research is an on-going project by the Historical Society. If you have photographs, documents or artifacts to donate let the guides know at the fair or call me at my home.
Carlton County Schools provide the yearly artwork. This year the Artwork came from the Moose Lake Elementary schools.
That’s all the news from Lake Havefunatharvestfest and Hello to all my readers.

There are many things going on in the next few weeks and foremost of them is the start of school, the start of the fall sports season, and the annual Harvest Fest in Cromwell.
School starts on September 1st this year. There have already been many school kids practicing for the fall sports season of Volleyball, Cross Country, and Football. Then the Harvest Fest set for the weekend of September 9th, 10th, and 11th with all their regular events.
The regular WELCA meeting will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Wednesday, September 7th at 7 PM.
I did the worship services at the ELCA Churches in Kettle River and Sturgeon Lake on the 21st. It was great to meet so many new folks and I really had a great time sharing my faith with them.
Bob and I attended the wedding of Penny Larson Amundsen to Kenneth Barnes on Saturday, August 20th, 2005 at Minnewashta Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
Penny is the daughter of the late Bernard and Deloris Larson. Penny was raised in Cromwell and moved to Duluth in about the 2nd grade. The wedding was a beautiful outdoor affair at a park overlooking a lake west of Mpls. Penny’s bridesmaids were her sisters, Kim, Peggy and Patty. I took lots of pictures, so will share them with you later.
Congratulations to Sarah and Eric Lipponen on the birth of their first child, a son, on July 30, 2005. Eric is the son of Adelia and Seppo Lipponen of Cloquet. Welcome to little Andrew Joseph Seppo Lipponen. Were you named after your Great Aunt Andrea Mikkola?
Congratulations are in order for Matthew and Amy DeCaigny of Sawyer on the birth of their 3rd daughter, Eliza Hope on February 17, 2005. Grandparents are Betty Swanson of Carlton, Susie DeCaigny of Sawyer, and the late Sherman Swanson and Larry DeCaigny.
It is not too often that we get a chance to celebrate a 90th Birthday, but that is just what we can do on September 4th when Dorothy Parkki will be celebrating her 90th at the Tamarack Snow Flyers Building in Tamarack, MN starting at 1 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Derek Nyberg, Cherie Nyberg, and Lindsay Lally have recently returned from a trip of a lifetime to London, England, Glasco, Scotland, and Belfast, Ireland. Derek went on business with the Protein Design Laboratory, Inc., Biological Pharmaceuticals. He goes to assess the contents of drugs that are sold around the world. He makes sure they are using the correct dosages and that the chemicals are in the correct amounts, etc. He invited his mom, Cherie and his Aunt Lindsay to go along. They all report that prices were very high there and that gas was over $6.00 U. S. per liter. A limo ride from the airport to their hotel cost them over $100.00 each. The U. S. Dollar is only worth half in Euro’s. Lindsay and Cherie were able to visit many wonderful sights while Derek was at work. They toured Buckingham Castle, went to the Giant Causeway and also to the northernmost point in all of the United Kingdom and saw the North Atlantic Ocean. They all report having a “Lovely Time.”
There is a new newspaper starting up in Floodwood called the “Northern Independent.” It is similar to the other area weekly papers and will be published by Editor, Sue Czarneski and Advertising Manager, Pat Murphy. Good Luck on this new venture into the newspaper business.
Get well wishes go out to Cody Scavezze after a recent truck accident near Cross Lake. Please keep him in your prayers.
That’s all the news for this week from Lake Hadagreattimeatthefair and Hello to my new friends in KR and Sturgeon Lake.
