There are lots of fall activities going on as usual. The trees have turned colors and most of them have lost their leaves already. Fall is truly in the air. I even had to bake some pumpkin pies to get into the fall spirit.

Last week I received a letter from McJohn Publishing, LLC, P. O. Box 390043, Edina, Mn 55439-0043. They sent me an order form for the book just published called “Daughters of the Game” by Marian Bemis Johnson and Dorothy E. McIntyre. It was several years ago that Marian (or was it Dorothy?), was in Cromwell interviewing our earliest female basketball players. She was doing research for this book and she interviewed several of our local ladies at that time. I can remember that she talked to Gladys Clark, Alice Dahlman Carter, Mae White, and Eileen Grover just to name the ones I can remember. If you are interested in ordering the book, it will cost $39.13 including the tax and postage and handling, for each book. If you order more than one book, the cost goes down slightly. You can also write to the address above and ask for more information on how to get this book. I’m sure Cromwell will be mentioned in this book and it should be of interest to many of our local residents. I plan to write to them and order a copy for myself right away. They also have an e-mail address: If you are interested in ordering a book, we could order together and save on the postage and handling costs. Just let me know soon.
That’s all the news from Lake Sunsetcomesearlynow and hello to my sister-in-law Mary who had a birthday on October 24th.

It seems that every year passes faster and faster. It’s already the end of October and winter will soon be here. I have even heard that some people have started their Christmas shopping. I have to wonder how the stores will be doing this year with the higher cost of almost everything? Most stores depend on their Christmas sales to bring them through the year with a positive cash balance, so I hoping that they do well again this year.
The Annual Bethany Lutheran Hunter’s Supper will be held at the church on Friday, November 4th, 2005 starting at 3 PM and serving till 7 PM. This is turkey and all the trimmings and some wonderful fellowship with friends and neighbors.
Bethany Lutheran will also be having their Annual Holiday Bazaar on Sunday, November 13th. Browse and Buy begins at 6 PM and the auction starts at 7 PM. There will be white elephant table, many hand made items, jams, jellies, pickles, quilts, etc. Pie and coffee will be served, too. Supplemental funding has been applied for from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. If you can help out with donations to the sale, please contact Judy Nieson, or call the church office. Items need to be brought to the church before the sale on Sunday. Thanks!
There has been a change in the date for the Carlton County Retired Educators meeting at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. The date has been changed to November 15th at 11:30 AM. This was necessary do to some conflicts that arose. The guest speaker will be Renee Bush, a former teacher from Floodwood, who spent last year teaching in Honduras. You will also be served a delicious homemade meal with dessert provided by the American Legion Hjalmar Alto Auxiliary in honor of American Education Week. Please try to come to this event and bring a friend if you know a retired teacher, or staff member.
Dawn Lippo has informed me of the up-coming Sno-Gophers schedule for fall and winter. There are several things to keep in mind. First off, new members are always welcome. All meetings are held in Cromwell at the Sno-Gopher’s Club clubhouse unless otherwise indicated. That building is just north of the railroad tracks on hwy 73. Then, they will be hosting a Halloween Masquerade Ball at Jackson’s Hole in Lawler on Saturday, October 29 starting at 9 PM. There will be a drawing for a deer rifle and cash prizes. The music will be by the Korpi Band. The next regular meeting will be on November 19th at 6 PM. Lunch will be served and this is the Fall Membership Drive and election of Officers.
I will be attending the wedding of Jon Sloan and Jan Dammann on Saturday, October 22nd in Mpls. I have been corresponding with Jon on the Internet, and would like to bring you up to date on the happenings in his life. Jon is a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and is doing his best to fit that into his busy schedule along with teaching art and the flurry of wedding plans. He did take a hiatus from Master Morgan’s School in Lakeville from September - October so he would have more time, but plans to return there after the wedding to teach one day a week. He has three boys up to black belt and wants to see that they reach their goals. He has trained them since they were beginners. One of the boys especially reminds him of himself. His dedication and willingness to train are admirable as well as the fact that he enjoys training with the katana (Japanese sword). Jon trains with this sword, too.
Jon teaches in The City, Inc. School and has three art classes a day with one prep hour. They have a block type of schedule and the classes are 80 minutes long. He teaches 1st and 3rd Quarters in one school setting and 2nd and 4th quarters in the other school. He teaches drawing on M, W, and F and painting on T and Th.
Jon is still pursuing a career in comic book illustrating and story writing. He was the guest creator at FalCon; a huge comic book show that was held at the state fairgrounds a couple of weekends ago. Coincidentally he ran into Herb Hilinski last spring as Herb’s son, Clint, had a table at the MicroCon show. Clint is another aspiring Comic Book artist. Jon has a comic book published and says he will make sure I get a copy. I’d love to share it with those of you who are interested.
Last weekend I had a chance to visit with Bob and Trudy Erickson. They live north of Wright, right across the road from the late Larry Kumm’s farm.
They have the most enormous pumpkins that I have ever seen grown around this area. They had them out in their field with an old antique horse drawn plow. I also took a couple of the grandkids up there to take some photographs of them. Bob and Trudy didn’t start out growing pumpkins to see how big they would get; they just got a couple of plants and put them into the ground. The pumpkins did all the work. I asked them if they gave them any special care or snipped off any of the blossoms, but they said the only thing that may have affected their growth was that the garden in on the same site as an old barn that used to be on the property.
I also got a tour of their home and that is another story. It was all handcrafted by the former owner and is very unusual. The most impressive part is all the hand hewn logs and polls that are used in the construction and also the huge fireplace that you can look down on through an opening in the second level of the home. I think there is another story in just the interior of their home for a later date.
There were only 3 days of school last week as the teachers and students had Thursday and Friday off for the Education Minnesota Convention.
On Monday the 17th the school participated in their annual Environmental Day/Career Fair. All the students K -12 spent part of the day outdoors learning about nature.
Congratulations to the entire Cross Country Team on their awesome races October 13th. Jordan Smith and Hailey Cook are the Junior High Polar League Champions and Ben Scharnberg made all conference by taking 10th Place. Hailey and Ben are from Floodwood, but are running with the Cromwell team this year.
Cross Country Sections are on October 27th and State is November 5th.
If the football team keeps winning, there will be some playoff dates to keep in mind. The playoffs will be on Tuesday, October 25th, Saturday, October 29th, and Friday, November 4th.
Volleyball Playoffs are on October 27th, November 1st and 3rd.
You will need to place your order for the first ever all color Cromwellian before October 28th if you want to get one this year. Call the school or Stephanie Brumwell at 644-3716 ext. 3100 so you don’t miss out. Remember they only order the number needed and last year several people were disappointed because they thought that there would be extra annuals they could buy in the spring. The cost is $35.00 with a $15.00 minimum down payment.
There is still time to sign up for a table at the Annual Cromwell Community Craft Sale to be held at the school on Saturday, November 5th. Call Peggy Olson at 644-3746 or Pauline Strand at 644-3713 to sign up.
The Murphy Family who recently moved to our area and have a son in 10th Grade lost their home and belongings to a fire on Friday, October 7th. Donations (cash, clothing and household items) can be dropped off at the school or call Cindy Richards at 357-2312 if you think you can help out. Check the last Bus Bulletin for more information. Over $260.00 was collected at the last football game for the Murphy’s.
That’s all the news from Lake Turnthoseclocksback and Hello to all those crafters and buyers.
