Wright News by or 2-20-06

Happy Belated President’s Day.  I guess we can celebrate and recognize all our presidents all month, and for that matter, all year.  I have been a Presidential Trivia Buff for as many years as I can remember, so at the end of this column, I will include some Presidential Trivia for you to think over.  Hope you enjoy it.

Got an email from Carolyn Krogh and she has some news tidbits for this column.

Her brother Jon Krogh was recently married to Linda Waldstein on January 14, 2006 in Litchfield, MN with a reception in Hutchinson, MN.  Jon’s mother Grace Krogh was joined by her family at this special celebration.  Attending were Susan (Krogh) Elin from Louisville, Kentucky, Steve Krogh from Duluth, MN, Mary (Krogh) Raymond Walz, of Redwood Falls, MN, Carolyn Krogh of Cromwell, MN, Chris Krogh and Dan Pou, Egan, MN, and Emily Walz, Northfield, MN.  While it was a small wedding, the newly weds were surrounded in love and music.  They met in their Community Choir and their wedding theme was Two Lives, One Song.  Everything was elegant and all the Krogh’s had a great time.  After the honeymoon couple went on a two week Caribbean Cruise, they will reside in Hutchinson, MN.

Grace and Carolyn Krogh spent a week vacationing with Mary and Raymond in Redwood Falls.  While there, she attended a concert by the St. Olaf Choir, exercise classes at Curves, played piano for the senior center, sang with the Methodist Church choir and even worked at the law office.  Carolyn also traveled to St. Louis, Missouri for her annual national computer user conference where she was many of her United Way friends and program developers.

Carolyn Krogh and the Cromwell Senior Group is trying to coordinate another AARP Driver Safety Course for April.  I guess there was such a big interest in the last one, that it will be rescheduled for those who missed it.

Over twenty 5th and 6th Graders attended the 1st Communion Class held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on February 14, 2006.  These youth were instructed in the meaning of taking communion.  They were informed that 1st Communion means remembering the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, eating His body (bread) and drinking His blood (wine), receiving forgiveness, giving thanks, celebrating, being together (the word communion), looking to the future, and being strengthened to serve.  Those from Wright that took the class were Jordan Suhonen, Derek Suhonen, Emily Warpula, Haylea Hassel, and Dennis, Devon, and Mandy Egge.

On Sunday, February 19, 2006 four young people participated in their 1st Communion at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. They were Haylea Hassel, Emily Warpula and Devon and Mandy Egge.  Dennis Egge was unable to attend and will take his 1st Communion at a later date.

February 14, 2006 was a big day for Gladys Clark of the Villa Vista Care Center in Cromwell.  Not only was it her 90th Birthday, but she was crowned Queen of Hearts at their Valentine’s Day Celebration.  Oliver Wydra was crowned King at this same event.  The King and Queen are selected by a secret ballet by the residents and staff at the Villa Vista.  Donna M. provided the music for the dance and the residents all enjoyed a special Sweetheart Dinner.

The Clothing Depot was closed on February 18, due to very cold weather. Just a reminder that the depot will closed when the morning temperatures are 20 degrees below or colder.  It’s just too cold to work in the depot all day when the temps are that cold.

Donations are still needed at this time for the depot.  Just drop them off on the 1st landing and they will be taken care of.

I still haven’t heard from anyone who knows Miles Beckner’s address.  Please send it to me if you have it.  Thanks.

The next Carlton County Retired Educator’s Meeting will take place on April 25th, in the Moose Lake area.  The guest speaker will be Jerry DeRungs and he will talk about the publishing and newspaper business.  Jerry is the son of CCRE member Jean DeRungs.

I guess I was misinformed about the gentleman who was recently buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Wright.  He was not William Mahar, but Pete Ellis. Sorry for the mistake.  Mr. Mahar did die, but he was not buried in Wright. Friday, March 3rd, is Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Day and is also “Read Across America Day” at the school.  In honor of this special event, the whole school will be observing reading activities most of the day.  The elementary teachers are even putting on a play for the kids in the auditorium. A magic show will be presented in the afternoon and the PTA will be serving birthday cake in the cafeteria at the end of the day.

The PTA has opened a Cardinal School Store at the school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:45 - 8:20 AM in the main entry hall.  This is a way for the kids to buy their school supplies and for the PTA to earn some extra money.

The next PTA Meeting will be on March 6th.  They realize there is NO SCHOOL that day, but plan on holding their meeting anyway.  Babysitting is also available during the meeting for those of you with youngsters.  There will be a Tupperware Party following the meeting, so if you are in need of any, please stop by and order from the PTA.

Our sympathy to the family of Rev. Ralph M. Davidson, 89, who died in Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake on February 15, 2006.  Ralph was our local Post Master, Annie Heaser’s Dad.  He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.  His funeral was held at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Kettle River, Mn on Sunday, February 19, 2006.  What a fitting day to have the funeral for a man of the cloth.  God Bless his memory.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Dale Thomas Piontek, 45, who died on February 13, 2006 in his home.  Dale leaves his daughter Leigha Piontek, a son, Adam Schminski, his parents Tom and Marlys Piontek, his grandmother, Lila Niskanen and several other relatives.  A private family service was held.

I was surprised to see Ray and Lindsay Lally’s Wedding photo in the Pine Journal during their Valentine’s Day Love Lasts Contest.  Every year they put in the wedding photos of 10 area couples and then the readers are to try to identify them and win a prize.  This year Penney Prevost of Cloquet won the Grand Prize.

State Senator Becky Lourey made a campaign stop at the home of Ken Peterson on Saturday, February 18th.  She talked at length about her plan for the future of Minnesota and there were also several questions from the folks that attended.  As most of you know Becky is now running for Governor and the election is this November.

Many family and friends helped Lillian Aho Celebrate her 85th Birthday at the nursing home in Moose Lake on Saturday, February 18th, 2006.  May she have many more.

Now, for the presidential trivia I promised.

DID YOU KNOW:

Washington didn’t live in the White House.  It wasn’t built yet. John and Abigail Adams once got lost trying to find the White House.  It was surrounded by woods and they couldn’t find it.

John Adams died on July 4th 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Jefferson kept wild grizzly bears in cages on the White House Grounds.  He had gotten them when on an expedition out west with Lewis and Clark in 1804.

Since bathing suits hadn’t been invented yet, John Quincy Adams swam naked in the Potomac River.  He would get up at 5 AM and hang his clothes on a tree then go for a swim.  One time his clothes were stolen so he had to ask a boy to run to the White House and get him something to wear!

The Baby Ruth Candy Bar was not named for Babe Ruth.  It was named for Grover Cleveland’s popular older daughter Ruth Cleveland.  Cleveland’s younger daughter, Esther was also well known.  She was the first child born to a president and first lady in the White House.

I guess that’s enough trivia for now.  Do you know some unusual facts about our presidents?  If so, please quiz me on them.  I’m always up for some new ones.

That’s all the news from Lake Getoutandwalk and Hello to Marion and Sheldon Larsen and their new twin grandbabies.

LOUREY MAKES CAMPAIGN STOP IN TAMARACK, MN

02/18/2006

The following is a story I wrote on the Campaign stop Sen. Becky Lourey made in Tamarack.  Us it as you see fit. I would appreciate getting paid for the story, but that is up to those of you who actually use the story.  Thanks, jkh

LOUREY MAKES CAMPAIGN STOP IN TAMARACK, MN by Jennie K. Hanson

Tamarack, Mn 2-18-2006

Over 50 people packed into the rural Tamarack farm home of Ken Peterson to see and hear what State Senator Becky Lourey had to say about her run for Governor of Minnesota.  She arrived shortly before 1 PM and stayed till after 3 PM even if her assistant, Kerry Gauthier encouraged her to go on to another appointment.

As she walked into the living room, Loren Lindevig played “Happy Days are Here Again” on his accordion and a new theme song: “If You’re Happy With Becky, Clap Your Hands”.  Becky went around giving everyone handshakes, hugs and thanking them for coming to help her.

Sen. Lourey has a clear plan for winning the Governorship and went on to say she also has a vision for after she wins.  After she wins, we will all be happier because we will understand the importance of a strong infrastructure, the importance of making sure that everybody has an opportunity, the importance of making the smart investments to make Minnesota a competitive economy again.  That’s what she said she will do as governor make smart investments in education, in health care, in a strong transportation grid and in energy and a vision of responding to the oil crisis at this point.  And we can pay for this fairly and honestly.

As our senator for these past 16 years, she was the author of Minnesota Care, which makes it affordable to get health care for our most needy citizens.  She wants everyone to be able to reach his or her full potential.  She goes on to say, “We need affordable childcare, affordable education to college and post secondary education and for keeping our roads repaired”.  She says we are now losing these things.  She believes that we need someone to be our Governor that has a clear distinction and a sharp contrast from the present Governor.  We need someone with a record of service that’s responding to what Minnesotian’s are looking for now, and that’s why Becky Lourey is running for Governor.

Before she left for another appointment, the folks were encouraged to donate to Becky’s campaign and to also attend their precinct Caucus on March 7th where they can elect local delegates to the County unit for the support of Becky Lourey for the next Governor of Minnesota.
