Wright News by April 21, 2006
Well, we’re back after driving 4,955 miles. We drove to San Francisco starting out on April 7th, 2006 and returned yesterday, April 20th. On the way we stayed with my brother John and Mary Dahlman in Denver, Colorado for 2 days and my other brother Glen and Anne Dahlman in Petaluma, California for 6 days. Our weather while traveling was great, except for slow moving traffic through Donner Pass on the 17th and high winds through Nebraska on the 19th. It took 4 days to drive back from San Francisco on I-80 and I-35. We drove approximately 600 to 650 miles a day and it took about 12 hours a day. It was a total of 2,450 miles one way. Now, we have to get used to being home again. The most we paid for gas was $3.01 in California and the least was $2.19 in Nebraska and we got over 20 miles per gallon, so it wasn’t too bad for expenses. Motels were pretty reasonable, too. We paid from $30.00 a night to $98.00 and since we stayed with relative’s part of the time, so that was reasonable, too.

We got to see the Redwoods, Fisherman’s Wharf, a wax museum, the harbor seals, the Golden Gate Bridge, and all the vineyards.
Visiting with family was the best part, though. Our son, Curtis flew in from Hawaii and met us in San Francisco for 4 days. It was great to see him, but sad to see him leave again.
Since I’ve been gone for two weeks, I’m a little behind on what’s going on in the community, so I will have to read the stack of papers I have and do some calling to see what I’ve missed and what’s going on in the future.

Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson 4-11-06
It’s been a week or two now since Day Light Saving Time started and it sure is great to have the sunshine so much longer in the evening. I guess next year Daylight Savings Time will start in the middle of March and end in the middle of November. I guess someone is always needing to change things. But we will just have to adjust to whatever comes our way.
The Sno-Gophers will be having their 23rd Annual BINGO at the Cromwell Park Pavilion on Friday, April 21st starting at 7 PM. This is usually a very well attended event, so come early and get a good seat.
The Carlton County Retired Educators will be meeting on Tuesday, April 25th at 11:30 AM at Gampers in Moose Lake. They will have a meal, conduct their business meeting and then be entertained by Mary Rose Varo, local singer and songwriter. New members and guests are always welcome to attend.
There is some news from Julie Peterson up at the Villa Vista. It seems that the new assisted living building will be started a little later than planned, but they will start digging September 1st, 2006. But this is better than waiting another year. It’s going to be a busy spring and summer as there is lots to do to get ready and the architect also has lots to do. There are changes going on all the time and the new building may be larger than they first planned. The staff at the Villa is also looking for ideas to include in the new building so please let them know if you have any ideas.
The Villa Vista also has a new coffee system. The coffee brand is now Douwe Egbert, which has been around for at least a hundred years. They will have a coffee pot in both the small dining room and the activity room, so the coffee is fresh and available at all times. They are also planning on having juice machines in both rooms for the staff and families to enjoy.
Julie Peterson says that this is a great time of year, and it’s fun to look forward to another growing season, warm weather, and barbecues outside.
Our sympathy goes out to the family of John (Kenny) McLain, age 76, of Cloquet. He died on April 4th, 2006 with his family by his side. Kenny is survived by his wife, Theresa, 7 children, 19 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Mae Maruski, Marge Moen, and Betty Johnson, 2 brothers, Richard and Fred and their families.
Did anyone notice that Tony Mancuso had a very unusual chair pictured in the Duluth News Tribune’s WAVE Section of the paper on April 6th? The chair is part of the dozens of unique chairs and chair - related art donated by local artists for the 4th Annual Chair Fair held at the Children’s Museum in Duluth.
Also on page 4 of the WAVE was a picture of our own Megan Abel dancing in “Fearless Symmetries”, a dance that will be preformed in concert with the American National Ballet on April 7th and 8th at Mitchell Auditorium, the College of St. Scholastica. Megan has been taking dance lessons since she was just a little girl and now is getting to perform with the best of the best. Congratulations, Megan, on all your hard work and dedication to dance.
Don’t forget to put the 2nd Annual Cromwell Community Arts Group “Art Fair” on your list of great things to do in April. They will begin their Art Fair at 9 AM on Saturday, April 29th. I think it runs till 2 or 3 in the afternoon. There will be lots of food available, also. They have many of the same artists coming back from last year along with many new ones. There will be entertainment all day from area singers, songwriters and even the hula dancers will be back, too, so plan to spend the day with the “Arts”. And I’m not just talking about guys named Art either.
There will be a 90th Birthday Party in honor of Eva Alberg on Sunday, April 23rd at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell starting around 11:30 AM. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
I’d like to take this time to this time to wish all my friends, neighbors, and faithful readers a very Blessed Easter. It’s times like these that we must stop and reflect on all our blessings.
That’s all the news from Lake Watchoutforfires and Hello to all my out-of-town readers. Have a great week!
