Wright News by June 27, 2006

The Area Clothing Depot held election of officers at their last meeting on June 20th.  Elected to Vice President was Art Jauss, Treasurer was Bubby Osborn, and new board members are Judy Gilbertson and Mary Oja.  Roxanne Norton resigned her board position for the time being.  Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM unless otherwise announced.

Congratulations to Jaclyn Ann Bloemendaal, daughter of David and JoAn Bloemendaal, and Sean Michael Hoke, son of Denise and Robert Hoke, II, who were married at a beautiful outdoor ceremony at her parent’s home in rural Wright, MN on Saturday, June 24th at 4 PM.  Pastor Tim Homstad officiated at the ceremony.  The Matron of Honor was Sarah Nolan, sister of the bride; Best Man was Keith Landolfi, friend of the groom.  The Bridesmaids were Cassie Hoke, sister of the groom and Marisa Frost, friend of the bride. Groom’s Attendants were Taylor Bloemendaal, brother of the bride, and Brian Guilewsik, friend of the groom.  The Flower Girl was Jenna Heeren, cousin of the groom, and Ring Bearer was Jacob Heeren, cousin of the groom.  The Soloists were Judy and Steve Kereakos, great aunt and uncle of the bride and they sang Spirit Song by John Wimber.  The Ushers were Travis Nolan, brother-in-law of the bride, Jason Ulrich, cousin of the bride and Emily Stanger, cousin of the groom.  A Wedding Reception was held at the Lion’s Club in McGregor at 6:30 PM.  Over a hundred and fifty neighbors, friends and relatives attended this wedding.

As most of you know, Mary and Larry Purcell have 8 children and they are all leading busy lives.  Their son, Dan has been battling cancer for the past year or more, but Praise God his tests came back “Cancer Free.” He still needs to have his throat dilated at least once a month but has had his stomach tube removed.  He says it takes him ages to eat, but he enjoys every moment of it.  He ate so much applesauce that now he says he never wants to taste it again.  Daughter Mary Alice has a goal of running a marathon in all 50 states.  So far, she has run in 39 states.  She is an RN working in surgery at Methodist hospital.  Susan comes up every weekend to help with Larry.  Mary says she wouldn’t know what to do without her help. Three of their kids (Sally and Marvin Dahl, Margaret Purcell and Shirl Kobold) have moved to University Place, Washington near Seattle.  Mary and Larry miss them all, but thank goodness for E-mail.  Margaret has articles in some gardening magazines quite often.  Her last one was on the Farmer’s Market in Minneapolis.  Son, John works with medical claims for an insurance company. Mary and Larry will be new grandparents again as their youngest daughter is expecting in August.

Mary says that the first time she came to Wright, in 1980, Marilyn Schultz took her to a baby shower to meet some of the people in the area.  And guess who the shower was for?  It was for our son, Curtis Hanson.  Wow, that sure was a coincidence.  I don’t even remember meeting her then, but I must have.

They lived out in the county north of Wright for many years, but have spent the last 10 years or more in the former home of Grace and Oscar Groth in Wright.  Anyway, we are glad the Purcells made Wright their home for these past many years.  Please keep Larry in your prayers as he is not doing too well.

The Cromwell United Methodist Church is pleased to announce the appointment of Reverend Russell Christensen who will lead the Northern Lights Parish. Rev. Christensen received his Masters of Divinity degree in May from Theological School in the Twin Cities and has most recently interned at the Motley UMC.  He and his wife, Faye, will be moving from Brainerd area to the parsonage in McGregor.  Their first Worship Service with him will be Sunday, July 9 at 10:30.  Please join them in welcoming their new minister.

The Cromwell Area YOT will be meeting at 1 PM at the Pavilion on July 11th for their as their annual picnic.  Everyone is asked to wear his or her favorite sunbonnet or straw hat to win a contest.  The food will be potluck.

Expect to be part of an old-fashioned ice cream social (the YOT will provide this) for dessert.  Come along and bring your friends! The Cromwell-Wright American Legion Auxiliary will hold their summer picnic on Monday, July 10th at Helen Stone’s Home just north of Cromwell.  Bring along a dish to share and your spouse or other special friend to help us celebrate summer.

There was a name omitted from the list of Queen Candidates for Wrong Days in last week’s news.  Please know that Olivia Warpula is also running with Tara Ceilich, Ally Cahoon, Kaylan Risacher, and Mandy Egge.

Remember: Wrong Days is July 14th, 15th, and 16th.

St. John’s Lutheran Church will celebrate their 100th Anniversary on August 20th, 2006.  The day will start with a 10:30 AM Worship Service with former Pastor Mackie preaching.  At noon a catered dinner (reservations are encouraged ahead of time - Call Linda Lehti at 218-357-2641) will be served.

At 2 PM they will have a program with Pastor Fondow, President of the MN North District, as the main speaker.  Claudia Thomas, of Cromwell, will also be available to help translate the old German Records of the Church. She has already been working on those old records for the church celebration.

Pastor N. Matt Saarem of Bethany and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches in Cromwell and Wright has received a call from Balsam Lutheran Church in Amery, Wisconsin.  After much prayer, consultation, and reflection, he has decided to accept the call.  He is planning on July 30, 2006 being his final Sunday. It will be difficult for Pastor Matt to leave this area as he has enjoyed the ministry here.  He has marveled at how God has worked in the lives of the people in this area.  Pastor Matt and his wife Sue pray that God will continue to work in you midst.  They wish everyone only the very best in the future and may God be with you all.  Farewell Parties for the Saarem’s will be held on July 30th during and after services at these respective churches. Household Hint:  “Grease” the threads on your nail polish bottles and you’ll never have trouble getting the tops off.  Use cold cream, baby oil, or any such thing available.

I’d like to leave you with a prayer I on E-mail.  It goes like this:  “Lord, I love you and I need you, come into my heart, and bless me, my Family, my home, and my friends, in Jesus’ name. Amen”

That’s all the news from Lake Congratulationstojackieandsean and Hello to all the newly weds in the area.

OUTSTAND SENIOR CITIZENS SEARCH

06/26/2006

Do you know someone over the age of 70 who will go out of their way to help anyone in need?  Are they constantly on the go, organizing or helping out with numerous volunteer services?

Nominations from county residents are now being solicited for the Outstanding Senior Citizens of Carlton County, according to the selection committee chaired by Madelyn Adelsgruber, from Wright, MN.

Both a man and a woman who are 70 by August 1st will be selected because their outstanding community involvement can serve as an example to others in the county.  They will be honored at the Carlton County Fair on August 18, 2006.

Those selected will receive special certificates of commendation from the Governor.  Also, their names will be submitted to the Minnesota Board of Aging for the state selection process for the Outstanding Senior Citizens. The winners are announced at the Minnesota State Fair on senior day, the second Thursday of the Fair.

Persons wishing to make nominations for the county awards can obtain official nomination blanks by phoning Mrs. Adelsgruber at 218-357-2712.  The entry forms can also be picked up at Volunteer Services of Carlton County Cloquet 218-879-9238.

The deadline for acceptance of nomination forms is July 21, 2006. Judging will be based primarily on the number and variety of contributions nominees have made to their communities after age 65.

Nominees must be residents of Minnesota and residents of the county they represent.  Previous county winners, not selected as a state winner, are nor eligible to participate again at the county level.  This is a change from previous years.

Selection of Minnesota’s Outstanding Senior citizens is a joint effort of the Minnesota Board on Aging, the Area Agencies on Aging, the State Fair Board, and the Minnesota Federation of County Fair Officers.
