Wright News - 06-06-06

06/06/2006

As I sit down to write this week’s news, the date is 06-06-06.  I wonder how many people are or were worried about this date?  I know I’m not, as it is just a number and there isn’t much to fuss about in my mind.

Most of our seniors have now graduated from high schools in the area and are probably working their summer jobs or looking for work.  I would like to congratulate all of them and hope for a bright future for you all.  Remember it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to attain your goals, but don’t ever give up and you will make them!

The Class of 1955 and 1956 will be holding a Class Reunion at the Fireside in McGregor, MN on Saturday, July 15th.  Reservations need to be given to Shirley Johnson, or Alice Lake by June 15th.  Please give these gals a call to make a reservation.

There will be a very special dance at the Cromwell Park Pavilion on Saturday, June 17th at 6:30 - 10:00 PM.  This dance will feature the Finn Hall Band.  The Finn Hall Band is a group of musicians dedicated to preserving the feel and sound of dances at the Finn Halls found in most Finnish American communities in the late 1800’s and into the 1950’s.  They try to remain true to the original tunes, and have added dances that were just coming into vogue in the 50’s and 60’s.  The cost is just $5.00 at the door.

The recent Athletic Auction held on May 5th netted a total of $3,600 for the Cromwell-Wright School Athletic Department.  This money will be evenly distributed among the football, volleyball, cross country, boys and girls basketball and softball programs.  The money will be used to offset costs of attending holiday tournaments, supplemental equipment needs, and incidental costs that occur in order to make the experience fun and build team unity. The Student-Athletes and Coaches want to thank everyone who helped make this auction possible.  Your generosity in the support of Cromwell Athletics is very much appreciated.

Vacation Bible School will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell the week of July 31 - August 4th.

Grace and Carolyn Krogh had special visitors from out of town a couple of weeks ago.  Kathy Downing from Indianapolis and Sally Hickland from Cincinnati came to Northern Minnesota for a short visit.  These gals have worked on various national United Way computer projects with Carolyn.  Since they have not been in the area before, Grace and Carolyn took them for a drive up the north shore, hiking at Gooseberry Falls State Park, on a boat ride around Eagle Lake and various other sights in and around Cromwell.  A good time was had by all.

The YOT of Cromwell will meet on Tuesday, June 13th at the Pavilion.  Guest Speaker will be Julie Peterson who will describe the new changes coming to the Villa Vista.  Come one and all.

Last week we had a meter man come to our home and change the electric meter on our light pole.  Lake Country Power is in the process of putting in automatic meters so we won’t have to read the meter and mail in that reading.  You will still have to read the meter until the company notifies you that you no longer have to read it.  You will only have to report the 5 numbers to the right on your bill even if there are 6 digits on the new meters.

“WAIT “TIL EIGHT” is a summer conservation program that has caught on with many members of Lake Country Power.  Members are asked to wait till 8 o’clock in the evening to use their dishwashers, dryers, or other high electrical use appliances.  There will be radio announcements reminding members to reduce their electric demand on certain days.  Thank you in advance for being aware and reducing your energy use until after 8 PM. Have you ever read the “Little House in the Prairie” Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder (LIW)?  Well, you may be interested in knowing that there is a “Wilder Pageant” held in Walnut Grove, Mn on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Friday - Sunday weekends in July.  That’s July 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, 2006.  I have been to this pageant, and it is well worth while.  There are also many other things to see in Walnut Grove about the Wilder’s.  The LIW Museum is great.  For more information go to walnutgrove.org or call 1-888-859-3102.

Last Summer I went to DeSmet, SD to visit the LIW Museum and displays.  I got to walk on the land that Charles and Caroline owned, rang the bell that Pa helped buy with his last $5.00, and even visited the graves of some of the Ingall’s family.

This summer I plan to go to Pipin, Wisconsin and Burr Oak, Iowa to see what they have there about LIW.

Last week I held the 5th Annual Villa Vista Spelling Bee.  This year I was not able to finish the Bee, as there are still 3 residents who are tied for first place.  They are JoAnn, Francis, and Gladys.  I’m hoping to finish the Spelling Bee on June 14th.  Boy, these residents sure can spell well.  I’m having to get much harder words.

Lindsay Lally Surprised on her Last “Last” Day of School.  Her daughters, Annie and Megan, drove up from the cities to surprise her with a special cake, 31 helium balloons (one for each year she taught school), and a dozen red roses on Thursday, June 1st, 2006.  Lindsay will be retiring in December of 2006 so June 1st of this year was her Last, “Last” Day of School.  The students in her class as well as many other teachers and staff joined in sharing her cake which had a photo of her from one of her first years of teaching on it.  Many photos were taken, hugs given, and a general feeling of fun accompanied this last day of school event.

The Area Clothing Depot is going well.  New officers will be elected on June 20th.  Remember to stop in and look around, drop off donations or volunteer to help when you can.  Volunteers are always welcome! The Harvest Fest Committee will be sponsoring a “Steak Fry” at the Pavilion in Cromwell on Friday, June 16th starting at 5 PM.  Come and join your friends and neighbors for a fun, tasty evening.

The Hitch Family, known as SIMPLE GRACE is back by popular demand to perform at Bethany Lutheran in Cromwell on June 11th the 10:30 AM service.  Stick around after for Sloppy Joes and dessert.

There will be a Father’s Day Brunch at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Sunday, Father’s Day, June 18th after the 9 AM service.  Fathers and Sons will be the special guests as well as any others including all women and gals. Plans are going well for the 41st Annual Wrong Days in Wright events.  This year Wrong Days will be early as the first Saturday in July is the 1st, so that makes WD on July 14, 15th and 16th.  There will be all the usual events so watch for the posters to check on your interests.  One thing I need you to do is to let me know if you or a group is willing to perform at the Friday night Talent Show.  It is not a Contest, but a Show.  So get your act together and join in the fun.  Call me at 218-357-2385 to sign up. The Carlton County Retired Educators will be meeting at the Four Seasons in Scanlon, Mn at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, June 13th.  Guest speaker will be Tami Depre, of Esko, Mn.  She will talk about her career with “Women in Construction” and as an Executive Officer of the Arrowhead Builders Association.  She is the daughter of Howard and Margaret Dahlman Taylor of Duluth.  Please come and bring a guest if you can.

Starting this week, I’m going to try to end each article with a helpful household hint.  I can’t guarantee that they will all work, but thought they could be helpful.  So here goes: Do you have candles that don’t fit your candle-holders?  Run very hot water over the end of the candle to soften it, then press in the holder.

That’s all the news from Lake Waterthoseplants and Hello to all the gardeners in the area.  Have a great week!
