Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson - November 20, 2006
Hello. By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will be over and Christmas will only be a month away. Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I have done some, but I do have several ideas for gifts, now I need to get them before they are all gone! Just a reminder, please try to remember a resident at a local nursing home when shopping for friends and family. Just drop off your gift at the nursing home and label it man’s or woman’s gift. I’m sure they would really appreciate it, as some residents don’t have family to give them gifts.
We also need to remember the Tri Community Food Shelf. There are baskets in the local stores or the Bethany Lutheran Church to drop off food items. Also call Sherrie Fisher for more information on the Food Shelf.
The St. John’s Lutheran Church women will be having their Christmas Party at noon on Thursday, December 7th at the church in Wright. Guests are welcome to attend. Mid Week Advent Service will be on December 13th at 5:30 PM and Regular Worship will be on December 24 at 10:30 AM.
The Women of Bethlehem Lutheran will be having their Annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:30 PM. Guests are also welcome to attend. Please bring a table favor if you like and something to put out for coffee and goodies.
Our Sympathy goes out to the family of Monty Allen Pearson of Wright who died on November 14, 2006 in Moose Lake, MN. So to his son, Eric of Blaine, two granddaughters, Kelsie and Madison Pearson, his sisters, Geralyn (John) Aho of KR and Robyn (Boyd) Larson of Mahtowa we offer our sincere sympathy. Monty’s funeral was held on November 18, 2006 at the Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet, MN.
It’s Over! That is the Cromwell-Wright Football season, and boy what a year it was. The guys gave everybody reason to be proud. They went all the way to state and the Metrodome, again this year. There are only four 9-man Football Teams in the whole state that can say that! Wheaton gave our guys all kinds of problems, but we hung in there and kept right on battling right up to the end. We had several chances to make touchdowns, but it was not to be. Thanks guys for another great year. You deserve a pat on the back and a good, long rest!
I happened to run into Judy and Wil Tamminen in the dome at the football game and Wil said he slept really well the night before the game because he was protected by Polar Bears. Yes, 5 or 6 Floodwood Polar Bears spent the night at the Tamminen’s in Forrest Lake and then attended the game on Friday morning. This shows how much other polar league teams support each other. Thanks Floodwood and all the other towns along the way to Mpls who had signs of support for the cardinals posted along the highways and towns.
The Cromwell-Wright PTA is sponsoring a Cookie Walk at the school on Tuesday, December 12 from 6 - 9 PM. The public can purchase cookies at $5.00 a box for small - 3 dozen and $10.00 a box for the large - 6 doz. Cookies are needed to be donated also. Call Jeanne Weimer to donate. Thanks in advance!
David Homstad had the misfortune of falling out of his deer hunting tree stand and is now in St. Luke’s Hospital with severe back injuries. He lay in the woods for 4 - 5 hours before his daughter found him and got help. David will be having or has already had surgery on his back and we can only pray for the best for him. He also had a slight heart attack during this time.
Household Hint: Never walk up the stairs or down the hall just to put something away. Put it near the stairs or hall entrance and take it with you the next time you have to go that way.
This week’s Bible verse: The Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer … in Him will I trust.
II Samuel 22: 2,3.
That’s about all the news I have for another week. Keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers during the upcoming holiday season and stay safe. Oh, Lake Gobblegobblegobble is now frozen over.

Congratulations to Jordan Smith of Cromwell and Sarah Chasson of Floodwood who went to State in Cross Country on November 4, 2006. These two fine young people were great representatives of our area. Also Thanks to Coach K for all your help with our whole C-C Team.
Congratulations to the Cromwell-Wright Football Team on their win over MIB in a very close, well fought out game. Because of the win, Cromwell-Wright School will be closed on Friday, November 17th so folks can go to the game at the Metro-Dome. The game will be at 8 AM, so stay up all night or go to bed early and get up and go support our team. Best of Luck to our guys and their coaches in Mpls.!
There will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday and Friday the 23rd and 24th for Thanksgiving. There will also be early dismissal on Wednesday, November 22nd.
Girl’s Basketball practice began on November 13th. Wow, where do the seasons go?? Their first game will be on November 28th at Cherry and the first home game will be on December 1st Vs. Cook. Games will be at 5:45 and 7:30 unless otherwise announced. There are full schedules at the school if you need one.
Gladys Clark was one of our former Basketball stars back in the 1930’s and she always shows an interest in the girl’s and boy’s sports.
The Cromwellians are now on sale at the school. They are $35.00 if ordered before December 1st. Call Mr. Berthiaume at 644-3716, ext. 3100 between 2:15 - 3:45 PM, to order.
Congratulations to Mason Hansen and Stephanie Schmidt who were married on September 3, 2006 in Gatlinberg, Tennessee. A Wedding Reception will be held for them on Saturday, November 25th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 2 - 4 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. Mason and Stephanie are both stationed at Goose Creek Navel Base in South Carolina where Mason is teaching at the Navel Base.
Former Cromwell-Wright graduate, Jon Sloan is teaching at The City, Inc. School for the next 2 quarters. Jon is still busy with Tae Kwon Do, and is taking classes in Haidong Gumdo, a Korean sword art. He is also staying on track to test for his 5th Degree Black Belt in May of 2008. His wife, Jan is busy at Cargill, the fabric shop, and helping out with costumes for the church Christmas program. She’s also taking a class in multimedia for her Graphic Design class.
Jon and Jan celebrated their 1st Wedding Anniversary quietly as Jon strained his voice at a Tae Kwon Do Tournament the day before and couldn’t get three sentences out without straining his voice. I guess he had to just whisper “sweet nothings” into Jan’s ear on their anniversary. Jon and Jan hope to be up in this area for the Christmas Holidays.
Mike Thom is in a “Hurry up and wait” mode as far as his deployment to Iraq is concerned. He is supposed to stay in Florida for a while, so will just have to wait and see what his orders are after the election. I’m sure he and his parents, Wayne and Liz, are also anxious about his deployment.
Craig Frieremuth is now in Iraq so we need to keep him in our thoughts and prayers, too.
Our sympathy to the Family of Millie Lindquist on her recent death. A Memorial Service will be held for her at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 3 PM.
The Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell is having their Annual Bazaar and Auction on Sunday, November 19th starting at 6 PM for Browse and Buy and Auction to start at 7 PM. There will be No White Elephant Items this year. But there will be homemade pie! This year’s auctioneers are the Switzer Brothers, Bill and Rob. It’s great to see that the auctioning stays in the family, guys!
The Villa Vista wishes to announce that their Annual Christmas Family Night will be on Sunday, December 3rd at 6:30 PM. All residents’ family, friends and anyone who wishes is welcome to attend this great way to get the Christmas Season started.
The Annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers for the Women of Bethlehem Lutheran in Wright will be on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:30 PM. Guests are welcome for this event. Irene Bolstad will be doing the entertainment.
Just got an email from Pastor Matt and Sue Saarem and they wish to report that Sue’s mother is doing well in the nursing home. She hasn’t had any more spasms that had caused her so much trouble. The Saarem’s are also pleased with their new home even if they have a few boxes left to take care of. The curtains are up and guests are welcome!
Sue’s brother Steve is healing well from his recent knee replacement surgery, but has lots of therapy.
It’s over! That is the election activities for another few months. I’m sure the presidential campaign will be getting underway very soon, though. Were there more election ads this year, or were we more aware of them? Maybe it was just that they were more critical of the opposition. Mud Slinging has become a new art.
Happy Belated Birthday to Hilda Nivila of the Villa Vista, who turned 90 on November 7th. Joan Mapes will celebrate her birthday on November 27th and Sonja Eggerdahl on the 30th. Cards are always welcome for the residents of the Villa. Remember them at Christmas, too.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I thought I’d include my favorite Pumpkin Pie Recipe.
Pumpkin Pie
- 2 - 9” deep dish pie crusts - I make mine from the recipe on the box of lard.
- 1 - 29 oz. Can of pumpkin
- 6 - eggs slightly beaten
- 1 and 1/2 - cups Light Brown Sugar
- 1/2 - cup granulated sugar
- 1 - teaspoon salt
- 2 - teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 - teaspoon each of Cloves, nutmeg, and ginger
- 1 and 1/2 - cups milk
- 1/2 - cup whipping cream
Prepare 2 pie crusts, Combine eggs, sugar, salt and spices and beat well. Blend in pumpkin. Add milk/cream beat well. Pour into pastry lined pie pan. Bake in a hot oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then reduce heat and bake at 350 Degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. Pie is done when knife or toothpick, inserted in center, comes our clean.
The Mini Bus Schedule is November 24th to Duluth and November 16th to Cloquet. Call Edna Samuelson to sign up the day before if you are planning on going.
Don’t forget to donate to the Area Food Shelf. Just drop your items off at the area stores, or call Sherrie Fisher for more info.
A group of gals and guys from Floodwood and myself went to Fitger’s in Duluth on the 12th for their Sunday Brunch and the play; “How to Talk Minnesotan”. We left Floodwood on the Arrowhead Mini Bus about 11 AM and returned at 4:30 or so. You betcha we had a good time! This play is fun to see and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Whatever!
The PTA is planning a Cookie Walk Fundraiser. They need volunteers to bake and donate cookies for this event. Please call Mary Rose Varo at 644-0920 or Jeanne Weimer at 644-3953 if you can help out. No details on when the Cookie Walk will be yet.
I hope all the hunters had good luck this year. Now, the deer can rest for awhile.
That’s all the news from Lake Freshsnowontheground and Hello to Smith and Casson.
