Retirement Party ALERT!  After 31 years in the 3rd Grade, Lindsay Lally will be retiring from teaching on December 22, 2006.  A Retirement Party will be held in her honor on Sunday, December 31st (also her 59th BD) at 12:30 PM at the Cromwell Community Pavilion.  The cost is $10.00 per person for a Turkey Dinner and the gift donation.  Sign up and pay at the school by December 22nd.  If you cannot make it to the party and want to donate towards the gift and have your name on the card, also, please do that at the school.  The meal will begin at 12:30 PM, program at 1:30 PM followed by music.  For more information, call me at 357-2385 or the school at 644-3716. If you would like to say a few words at the party, please let me know when you get there.  We need to give her a wonderful send-off into retirement.

Don’t forget to vote on the School Excess Debt Service Levy Referendum on Tuesday, December 19th at the school.

There will be a high school concert on December 20th at 7 PM.

December 16th is the evening set-aside for the Special Luminary celebration in Cromwell.  If you would like to have a special luminary on display with your loved one/s name/s on it, please let Sheryl Smith (644-3927), Sam Clark (390-2974) or Carolyn Krogh (644-3670) know.  This year will really be special, as there will be several Special Musical Groups performing at the Memorial Service, too.  Try to attend and you will be blessed!

The Cromwell United Methodist Church is holding their annual Christmas service on Sunday, December 17th celebrating traditions, decorations and sounds of Christmas. The 10:30 AM service will be followed by a potluck lunch.  Feel free to come and join then in the festivities of the season.

Mike Thom is still in Florida waiting for deployment to Iraq.  Liz, his Mom, says he sure misses his children.

The Cromwell United Methodist Church had a special celebration on December 10, 2006.  They welcomed several new members to their congregation.  Paula Collman, Carrie and John Foley, and June Kingsley were honored at this celebration.  Welcome new members!

Our Sympathy is again extended to those in the area who have lost loved ones recently or in this past year.  Yes, this is a tough time to lose a loved one, but when you have faith in the Lord, it is a wonderful time to be with God at Christmas.  It gives new meaning to the phrase: “I’ll Be Home for Christmas!” Home with the Lord in Heaven that is. This past month we have lost 4 area residents.

Our sympathy to the family of Melvin Lind who died on Sunday, December 10, 2006.  His funeral will be held on Friday, December 15th at 11 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran in Wright.  More on that next week.

Our sympathy to the family of Robert “Bob” Clark, Jr., 56, of Cloquet, Mn who died on December 5, 2006.  Bob grew up in Cromwell and attended Cromwell High School.  He is survived by his wife Gloria and children, Camille, Stacy, Peter and Abraham and two granddaughters, Jayna and Gavin.  His funeral was on December 8th in Cloquet.

Our sympathy to the family of Sherman Carl Beck, 42, of Duluth who died on December 7, 2006.  Sherman grew up in Cromwell and his parents, Roy and JoAnne Beck still live there.  Sherman traveled all over the world and met his wife, Hyecha, in Korea while he was in the military.  Sherman will be deeply missed by his wife, parents and brothers and sisters.  Sherman sure was a cute little kid when I had him in the 4th Grade at the old Wright School.

Our sympathy to the family of Sonja Keiski who died on November 26, 2006. She will be missed by her three daughters, Joanie, Julie and Sue and their families.  Her funeral was held on December 1, 2006 at Northland in Cloquet.

Have you been getting those interesting Christmas letters from friends and relatives?  Well, I for one, love getting them.  It seems that Christmas is about the only time a person hears from some of our far-away friends.

Anyway, I got a letter like that from JoAn and Dave Bloemendaal.  They are building a new home across the road from her parent’s home in Hinkley, Mn. It isn’t ready to move into yet, but that will come.  Their daughter, Jackie was married on June 24 th, 2006 and now Sean and Jackie are living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Daughter Sarah and husband Travis live in South Carolina, but they were here for Thanksgiving.  Taylor is home for now helping with the building of his parent’s new home.

The Bethlehem Lutheran Ladies Christmas party held on December 6th was a big success.  There were over 35 woman and gals there to celebrate.  Special guests were Pastor Janeva as “Lena” and Irene Bolstad of Floodwood.  Lena talked on the “Cheeses (Jesus) of Nazareth” and Irene told some wonderful stories and played the piano for sing alongs.  There were also several ladies from St. John’s and Bethany, which made this such a special event.

There will be cookie packing at Bethlehem on December 16th at 9 AM.  Have your goodies there early, please.

I will be conducting the worship service at the Tamarack Presbyterian Church at 11 AM on Sunday, December 17th.  Please feel free to join us.

I also asked to be at a Book Signing in Moose Lake on December 2nd.  There are not very many books left now so if you want a copy of “Shades of the Past - The Teaching Histories of the Carlton County Retired Educators” please let me know soon.  We had 200 books and now only have about 25 left. I don’t know if we will do a 2nd printing.

With the recent deaths in the news from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, it may be a good time to buy a carbon dioxide detector.  I know I’m going to buy one for us and maybe even give some for gifts this Christmas.

A huge “Thank You” goes out to Ray Broker and Marlene Waseen of Barnum for the donations of knitted gifts for every resident at the Villa Vista.  I’m sure they will be very much appreciated on Christmas Eve.  If you have gifts for the residents, please drop them off soon.

Now for some Minnesota Trivia.  Do you know the history of the 6 golden horses that stand atop the state capital?  Well they were sculpted in 1893 by Daniel Chester French and Edward C. Potter and are called Columbus Quadriga.  They were dedicated in 1905, reguilded in 1949 and again in 1979.

In 1994-1995 they were removed for restoration and reguilding.  The horses stand for Wisdom, Prudence, Courage, Bounty, Truth, and Integrity. What was the original name of the settlement that became St. Paul?  Answer: Pig’s Eye (for the French-Canadian whiskey trader, Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant, who had led squatters to the spot.).

Sayings:  It’s a good thing Old Age doesn’t last forever.  Did you know that the more birthdays you have the older you get?

Household Hint: Store your Baking Soda by the stove.  It will smother a grease fire quickly and effectively.  Note: Never pour water on a grease fire!

A man and his clone went for a walk in the woods.  Suddenly the clone let out a stream of vulgarities and swear words.  The man said, “I hate that kind of language!  If you ever do that again, I’ll take drastic steps to stop it.”

The next day the two were walking along the edge of a cliff.  Again, the clone suddenly erupted in a bout of terrible swear words and obscenities. The man couldn’t stand it, and pushed the clone off the cliff.  The man was then arrested.  Do you know what they charged him with?  He was arrested for making an obscene clone fall!

Can you stand one more?

Dale Evans bought Roy Rogers a new pair of snakeskin boots.  As Roy rode out into the desert, a wildcat jumped from the bushes and ripped his boots to shreds.  Roy shot the wildcat and threw his carcass across Trigger’s back and rode quickly back to the ranch.  Dale greeted him at the door, as he held the slain wildcat in his arms, along with the torn snakeskin boots. Dale asked: “Pardon me, Roy, Is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?”

Forgive me for the Puns, I just thought you needed a little levity today. Oh, there’s just one more.  Did you hear that Rod Walli isn’t allowed to fly on a plane any more?  They won’t let him fly because he always carries “Weapons of Math Instruction” with him.  Of course I’m just kidding. Rod is a retired Math teacher.

Mae Maruski called me to thank everyone who gave her financial gifts for her birthday back in May.  She had requested that NO GIFTS be given, but she still got some, so she decided to use the money to buy cardamom breads for the coffee times at the Villa Vista.  Mae appreciates all her friends and just wanted to share that friendship with the residents at the Villa. Speaking of the Residents at the Villa Vista.  A two special people from Barnum have donated a gift for every resident for Christmas.  This wonderful couple spends all year knitting items and then donates them to worthy causes at Christmas.  Thank You to the Barnum Elves!  If you have a gift for a resident at the Villa, please drop it off soon.   Just label it Man’s or Woman’s gift.

The Area Clothing Depot will be holding their Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, December 9th from 10 AM - 3 PM.  There will be drawings for Free Bags and lots of goodies to eat.  It will also be Bag Day with everything in a bag for only $1.50.

Both Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran Church Sunday Schools will be having their Christmas Programs during the regular Church Services on Sunday, December 17th.  Come and enjoy the children as they tell the best story on earth!  Kids are also asked to bring goodies to serve after church.

The Elementary School Holiday Program will be held on Monday, December 11th at 7 PM.  The High School Program will be on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 7 PM.

There will be NO SCHOOL on December 23rd - January 2nd, 2007        Don’t forget to vote on the EXCESS DEBT SERVICE LEVY REFERENDUM  on December 19, 2006 at the school.  We already have this Levy and it needs to be renewed.

CHRISTMAS!  What do you think of when you hear the word Christmas?  There are many who are so busy that they almost dread the word.  Please take the time to enjoy Christmas and all it has for us.  Remember the Reason for the Season.

Another group of folks attended the “Church Basement Ladies” play at the Plymouth Playhouse in Mpls on November 29th.  This is a wonderful experience and I’m glad I went.

Congratulations to Cody Hendrickson, of Wright, who was named to the 2006 All-Area Football Team by the Duluth News Tribune.  His photo appeared in the Sunday newspaper on December 3rd, 2006.  Cody led the Cardinals to a 12-1 record and a berth in the Nine-Man State Semifinals after quarterbacking the team to the state finals in 2005, too.  Cody passed for 1,688 yards and 18 touchdowns, he rushed for 1,028 yards and 20 scores and totaled 140 points.  He was also named to the AP All-State first team in secondary, where he made 130 tackles, intercepted eight passes and recovered four fumbles.    There are only 4 nine-man teams in the state that get to play in the Dome and Cody has helped our team play there 2 years in a row. Cody would be the first to say that he couldn’t have done it with out the help of his whole team, the coaches and the parents and fans.  Thanks for another exciting football season, guys!!

Household Hint:  Cut down on cleanup time.  Keep a garbage bag handy as you cook and discard debris, cans, trimmings, rinds, etc. as you prepare a meal.

I keep a bag hooked to a cupboard drawer knob and an empty 3-lb. coffee container on the counter to dispose of the food garbage.  It works great and you don’t have to keep walking to the regular garbage can.
