Wright/Cromwell News by Jennie K. Hanson July 9, 2007

Our little community has once again been hit by an untimely and tragic death.  Mark Andrew Lippo, age 34, died at his home in rural Wright on Friday, July 6, 2007 as he was working on a vehicle in his garage.  He graduated from Cromwell/Wright School in 1991 and attended Southwestern Technical College in Granite Falls, Mn for two years.  Mark worked for Stanley LaBounty Manufacturing as a field service representative for the past 10 years.  Mark loved working and fixing anything mechanical.  He will be deeply missed by his mother, Junice, and brother Kris Lippo along with many friends and family members. His funeral was held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright, Mn.

Axel Harold Anderson, 91, longtime resident of Duluth, passed away Friday, July 6, 2007, while at the Silver Bay Veterans Home. He was born March 26, 1916 in Wright, Minn., to Oscar and Olga Anderson. Axel attended Denfeld High School. He was a World War II Veteran having served as a Staff Sergeant with the 380th Bomber Group, in the South Pacific. On Aug. 22, 1947, Axel married Hilda Ellen Mattila. He worked for Northwest Paper, Cloquet, Spot T.V., and retired from Superwood. Axel was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Hilda on March 1, 2007; his parents; two brothers, Oliver and Evert; and a sister, Linnea. He is survived by his brother, George (Fern) Anderson and a sister, Esther Anderson, all of Carlton; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  His funeral service was on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at the Bell Brothers Funeral Chapel in Duluth with burial in Lakeside Cemetery, Wright, Minn.

I got a note from Stan Tabako in Michigan and he writes: “Due to Osteo-arthritis in the severe degenerative stages I don’t travel much. I’ve had surgery twelve times now in four years. I’m not looking forward to it, but, I was recently told within a few years I may be in a wheel chair. My family has been burdened with this.”

June and July seem to be a busy months for weddings as Erin Suhonen and Nate Johnson will be married on July 14, 2007, Carrie Gervais and Andrew Knutson on the July 21, 2007 and Shana Hidy and Joe Sandstrom on August 4th, 2007.  Dustin Homstad and Linnea Anderson were married on June 23, 2007, Kailo Aho and Shannon Spolar on June 23, 2007, and Tammi Olson and Brian Olson on June 30, 2007.  So, know that lots of folks had some great get together’s to attend this summer. Are there others that I may have missed??

There was a great turn-out for the “Simple Grace” Concert at Bethany on July 1st, but if you missed that one, please plan to attend the “Sweet Water Revival” Concert on August 5th at the regular 10:30 service at Bethany in Cromwell.

There will also be a “Gospel Sing” at Wrong Days on Saturday, July 21st at 2 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright.  Janice Pettit Rollins will be the featured performer, along with other local talents.

Judy VonDeLinde attended Girl Scout Camp Shingobee in Hackensack, MN with her granddaughter, Kelsey Koupal recently.  They did sing-a-longs, arts and crafts and worked on badges.  Judy reports having a great time with Kelsey!

Judy VonDeLinde will be hosting the Hart/Harp/Peterson Family reunion at her home in McGregor on Saturday, July 21, 2007 starting around 1:30 or 2 PM.

The family of Vernon and Leone Harp, formerly of Wright, recently gathered for a family reunion in Mountain Lake, MN.  Celebrating Vernon’s 95th Birthday made the day extra special.  Present were 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and their parents representing four generations.

There was a nice article in the Duluth News Tribune on July 4th about Brian Saaristo and how he has progressed since coming home from being wounded in the Iraq war.  Brian was riding in a Humvee on July 2, 2006 when it was hit be a bomb, so it has been a year since and Brian is doing well.  The Saaristo’s are now living in Mathtowa.

Kathleen Eggenschwiler, of Switzerland visited her parents, Margaret and Doug Sewell recently.  Her friend, Bonnie Fjelde of Florida also spent 2 days in Cromwell before they joined some girlfriends on a trip to Bayfield and came back for 5 additional days before going to Mpls. to meet old friends.  She has now headed back to her home in Switzerland.

The Arrowhead Transit Mini Bus goes to Cloquet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month and to Duluth on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month.  Call Edna Samuelson in advance to sign up.  The bus stops at the Wright Co-op at 8:55 AM, and also at Cromwell and the Villa Vista.

Are the kids getting bored yet with summer vacation?  If so they can attend Vacation Bible School at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell June 30 – August 3rd from 9 AM – 12 noon.  Call the church at 644-3640 to pre-register or to volunteer to help out. Lynn Odegaard and Julie Hedin are getting it organized again this year.

Trivia:  Curt Carlson started the Gold Bond Stamp Company with just $50.00 he borrowed from his landlord.  He went on to become one of Minnesota’s richest men.

White Bear Lake, Mn was the first city in the United States to ban cigarette machines.

Zebulon Pike raised the American Flag for the first time in what is now Minnesota by Leech Lake in 1805.

Household Hint: When cooking your family’s favorite dishes, consider making a double batch while you have the ingredients out.  Freeze one-half and serve later when you’re rushed or just don’t feel like cooking!  I’ve done this for years, and it really works well especially for soups or chili.

Bible Verse for the week: Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt. 11:28

The family of Lillian Kunshier would like to express its appreciation and thanks to the Cromwell community for their thoughts and prayers in the time of the death of Bev’s mother.  We would especially like to give special thanks to our neighbors, Dwight and Kathy Olson.

Art Jauss enjoyed a “partial” cousins reunion over the weekend, hosted by Art, Mark and Barb at the MarBarRanch in rural Tamarack, MN.  His cousin, Lou Hall from Washington State, cousin Melvin Bopp and wife, Kathy, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and his sister, Dorothy Zazubek, from Rochester, MN attended this fun get-together!

Congratulations to Jason Line, on an article in the front page of the Duluth News Tribune’s Sports Page on June 29th.  Jason and his teammate, Greg Anderson have been doing well in the NHRA’S Pro Stock standings.  I even got a chance to see Jason interviewed on National Television last night (July 1st) on ESPN. Jason even has a “mini car” of his racing car that is available.  Where can I get one?

June Ryan, formerly of Wright, Mn and now living in Osseo, Mn sends her greetings and love to the area folks from here.  She says. “ I really enjoyed visiting at the Clothing Depot and really miss each and everyone of you.  I miss your little town.  This place I’m in is really nice, we have our own apartment and also lots of entertainment.  Food is great, too.”

We miss you, too, June.  Stop in if you ever have a chance to come back to Wright.

I also got a letter from Luana Vigness Walker.  She asked me to announce that “The Class of 1967 will have their 40 year class reunion on Saturday, July 28th at the Fireside Inn in McGregor.  Social Hour is at 6 PM with dinner at 7 PM.  All former teachers are also welcome to attend.  Please call John Manninen if you have any questions.

Happy Birthday to Ray Lally on July 11th.  I know he is a faithful reader and want to thank him for that.

I want to thank another faithful reader of the Wright and Cromwell News. Sheryle Benson, of Merrillville, Indiana has looked forward to the news every week.  She even sent a “Letter to the Editor” in the Pine Journal which reads: “ Just received news of the passing of Eva Alberg.  It’s sad to think of never hearing her words again.  It’s been several years since she passed the Cromwell Column to others, but her previous years of faithfully doing the column put the heart in Carlton County.  Eva’s column put humanity in the paper.  Years from now there may not be ‘down talk’ to turn to in the paper, and it will be a loss.  It is the first thing I turn to when I receive the paper.  I feel privileged to have been able to read many of her columns and actually I might not have continued to get the paper sent to me, except for the newsy little column that appears in the paper.  She gave us a great legacy – the written word – and made it interesting.” Over 50 people attended Juhannus at the Bill Lake Farm on June 22nd. Juhannus is the Finnish Mid Summer’s Day event.

I talked to Tami Zaun, PR person from Lake Country Power tells me that the FalKirk Mine Tour will be in September 12, 13, and 14th, and the Wind Farm Tour will be on September 18 and 19th.  You can call LCP to sign up or get more information.  These tours are also listed in your last light bill.
