I got an email from Betsy Benson Karkinen and she writes: “Life is good! I have lived in Hoyt Lakes since we moved in 1987. I’m married to Jim Karkinen. We have 2 children, Samantha who is a senior and Gus who is in 6th grade. They keep us busy running with sports and school events! We spend our free time (what little we have once Gus starts hockey J) in the outdoors. Jason and his wife Cheryl have a daughter, Chloe, who is in kindergarten. They also live in Hoyt Lakes. We just had a get-together with mom and dad for Matt’s 60th Birthday. They had just recently returned from a vacation to Branson, MO. They had a wonderful time!”

The Rev. Robert G. Esbjornson, 89, died on October 27, 2007 in St. Peter, MN. A memorial service was held for him on November 1, 2007 in St. Peter. Bob was a long time professor of religion at Gustavus Adolphus College. Bob’s connection to the Wright area was through his late step-mother Anna Dahlin Esbjornson. Bob, a 1937 graduate of Cromwell High School was highly thought of in this area by those who knew him.

There is also free hot chocolate, Apple Cider, and supplies for making som-mores. Santa is there from 5 – 10 PM every night they are open which is November 22 – Dec. 29th. Donations to the Salvation Army Food Shelf are encouraged and last year they collected over 9,000 pounds of food. Just go to http://www.bentleyvilleUSA.com for special programs and pictures.
Did you know that the Pandemic Flu of 1918 took more than 3 times as many lives as did World War I? There were 50 million deaths due to the flu compared to 16 million in the war. Over 12,000 died in Minnesota during this epidemic. This hit my family as my grandfather, Edwin Dahlman, died of the flu in November of 1918 after fighting the fires that went through the Cromwell area in October of 1918. I wonder how different things would have been if he had lived. I’m sure I wouldn’t be here writing this news if he had lived. I probably wouldn’t even have been born. Something to think about isn’t it??

Welcome snow! As I sit down to type the news this morning, it snowing slightly. And with the changing of the clocks, it really feels like winter will soon be upon us. At this time of year, I always get the urge to bake some pumpkin pies.
I was gone for 2 weeks to Denver, Colorado visiting with my brother John, sister-in-law, Mary and their families, which was a great vacation. While there, I was able to watch the World Series with John and Mary and that was especially great as the Rockies were in the series. I also got to go to the top of Pike’s Peak for the 1st time in my life as well as the Garden of the Gods. What a beautiful country!
While I was gone, my husband, Bob and Leo Dahlberg took our exchange students to Mt. Rushmore in SD. They also had a great time. The exchange students had never ridden so far on one trip. They thought they were at the west coast after so many hours in the car.

Grace and Carolyn Krogh were in Minneapolis last weekend to visit with Grace’s sister and niece, Myrtle and Donna Berg from Hartford, Wisconsin. The gals enjoyed a weekend celebration, including a celebration of going to the show Church Basement Ladies. Whatever you’ve heard about this show, it’s not just funny, it is hilarious! If you like small towns, Lutherans, church women of any denomination, Norwegians, or general good music, dancing and fun, you have to see this show. The show is playing at the Plymouth Playhouse and scheduled to run through the end of March.
The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church between Cromwell and Wright will be holding their Annual Turkey BINGO on Saturday, November 10, 7-9 PM.

Minnesota proudly accepted several awards at the National American Legion Convention at Reno, Nevada. The Community Service Award was given to the Hjalmar-Alto # 429 Cromwell-Wright for “Operations Welcome Troops Home.” A citation plaque for the best report for the North Western division Chairman, Ann Heikkila, Auxiliary President was presented. The hours and hours spent on the Brian Saaristo Event placed them on the top to receive that coveted award. Surprised and shocked!
Susan Burns and Ann Heikkila motored to Kenosha, WI for the Parents/Grandparents Weekend to see Kari Heikkila at Carthage College. Carthage is a beautiful college on the shores of Lake Michigan. No freighters in sight, but lots of sailors, as the Great Lakes Training Center is near by. There are over 700 Freshmen at Carthage enrolled in various fields with a daily Christian study hour in a lovely chapel. Students in the band for every event and games are paid to participate. What an incentive! Instruments appear everywhere as they are polished and buffed to the shine. Kari is very pleased with her choice to enroll at Carthage. Her Passport is ready as she leaves January 2008 on a trip to China with a group of students and instructors.
Our Football Season ended quite abruptly and unexpectedly by the Floodwood Polar Bears on October 27th. It goes to show that in high school sports anything can happen. The Bears have been working hard to beat the Cards for years and now they did it! I’m sure they enjoyed the win, but unfortunately they lost the following week to a well - prepared McGregor Merc’s Team. Now McGregor will represent Section 5 in the State Tournament at the Fargo Dome on November 8th. Good Luck, Merc’s!!
I was reading the Duluth News Tribune and noticed an article about Bryan and Scott Lindquist. Their dad is Tim Lindquist and he taught school here in the early 1990’s. The twins were pretty little back then, but now Bryan is a cross-country runner and Scott is on the Esko Football Team. Tim is also a teacher in Esko. It’s always great to hear good things about our former teachers and their families. They both are guards so we can all watch for them on the Esko Basketball team this winter.
I got a nice letter from Fred Olesiak and he wants to thank everyone for the cards for his 50th Birthday. But he writes that since he was born in 1958, it was actually his 49th! OOPS! Oh, well, he said he will look at them again next year. He is able to keep up with the area news by reading the local newspapers and he also gets to read the Duluth paper. Fred is attending classes some of which are titled: Thinking for a Change, Cycles of Abuse, and Life Beyond Loss. He also sent me some words of wisdom that I will end this column with. They are good words for all of us.
WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS, THEY BECOME YOUR WORDS.
WATCH YOUR WORDS, THEY BECOME YOUR ACTIONS.
WATCH YOUR ACTIONS, THEY BECOME YOUR HABITS.
WATCH YOUR HABITS, THEY BECOME YOUR CHARACTER.
WATCH YOUR CHARACTER, IT BECOMES YOUR DESTINY!
That’s all the news from Lake Gladtobebackhome and Hello to all my readers in Floodwood and McGregor.
