The Wright/Cromwell News by Jennie K. Hanson September 10, 2007

Welcome Fall and all that Fall entails.  Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Church suppers, and all the beautiful colored leaves.

Yesterday, the 9th, we went up to the Fire Tower and did the climb to the top.  Yes, 62 - year - old Jennie Hanson made it to the top for the first time in this century.  I thought that if I’m ever going to climb it again, I better do it now.  Actually after the 2nd and 3rd stories, it went pretty well.  But, I did think of the 35-W Bridge collapse as I went up.  There were no rust spots, but you still think the whole thing could come down someday.  I even saw where my brother John D. signed the bridge with the date of October 4, 1967.  I wonder if that was the last time he climbed to the top of the fire tower?

Now, you read that I said “We” went to the fire tower, well, “we” is our new family.  Last month, I was attending the Carlton County Fair and there was a booth there from the AYUSA Student Exchange Program.  There was a young man named Sonet, 17, from Bangladesh, there who was looking for a Host Family and guess who heard about him?  I did.  Well, at first my grandkids asked if we could keep him!  I had never even thought about getting exchange students, but thought it could be a good idea, so I said, Yes.  Before he came to live with us, we also signed up to get another young man.  His name is Gwang Ho, 15, and is from South Korea.  Sonet is a Senior at Cromwell/Wright and Gwang Ho is a Sophomore.  This is the first time in years that we have had teenagers in our home, and so far its going great.  Having these guys is an educational and learning experience for them and us.  Sonet has already signed up to try to play football and Gwang Ho wants to play basketball.  Their main reason for being here, though is to get an American Education, thus the name “Exchange Students!” both guys speak English pretty good, but have a ways to go before understanding everything.

Sonet is very strong and is looking for getting some odd jobs if you need someone to help you around your home or yard.  He is very responsible and would be a good worker.  Just give me a call if you are interested.

Les Harkonen will be providing the dance music on Thursday, September 23rd, for the monthly dance at the Cromwell Pavilion from 1 – 4 PM.  These dances are usually very well attended and lots of fun.

The Hjalmer Alto American Legion Auxiliary is asking all members to get their dues of $15.00 paid NOW!  Get the money to Ivona as soon as you can.

There will be an “Open House” Baby Shower for Phoenix Anderson, son of Star and Jeff Anderson on Saturday, September 15th from 11 AM – 1 PM at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright.

There will be a Rummage Sale at 1415 Tamarack Lake Road, Wright. MN, on September 14th and 15th from 9 – 5 PM.  That’s just a block or 2 south of HWY 210.  Turn by BJ’s HWY Express.

A lot of wonderful memories were celebrated on Saturday at the home of Barb Hart.  This was the day of the Hart Auction Sale.  There were hundreds of cars, vans and big trucks that went past our home on their way up to Barb’s.  Most, if not all of Russ’s tools and machines were sold at auction, so thus ends another chapter in the life of the Harts.  Russ had enjoyed using all his tools and machines on the farm after he retired and now that he has died, it was time to sell them.  It must be hard to do, but it had to be done.  May his memory be blessed and remembered by all who knew him.  He was a good neighbor and friend and he will be especially be missed by the Suhonens.  Russ had helped them with haying and many other field chores for many years.

Wanda Shiflett has informed me that Logan will be home from his military training in Georgia, soon.  He is in the National Guards and will now be attending college this fall.

Please give me an up-date on your military men and women.  We’d like to have a complete list of names and addresses for Veteran’s Day.

I recently found several old Scrapbooks that my dad had made in the 1950’s and I read in one of the articles that our own Kenneth Nikko was held as a Prisoner of War in Korea in the 1950’s.  He was released in 1953.  His family never knew for sure for a long time if he was dead or alive while he was missing in action during this war.  Thank you Kenny for your service to our country.  There must be a longer story here.  I’ll try to look into it.

Bob and I attended the funeral for June Taplin along with a full church of friends and relatives on September 5, 2007 at the Tamarack Church of Christ.  June died on September 1, 2007 at the home of her son, David Taplin and family in rural Wright, Mn.  She had been living there with her husband, Gene for the past several months.  Gene had been the pastor at the Church of Christ for 17 years in the past, so having June’s funeral in Tamarack was so fitting.  June is survived by her loving family of daughter, Dr. Patrecia (Allen) Jacobson, sons, David and Suzanne Taplin, John and Marsha Taplin, and grandchildren: Kharissa, Esther, Sarah, Ariel, Christina, Hannah, Joshua, Elizabeth, Katelyn and Jacob and her husband, Gene.  Special music was provided by many family members.  Her grandchildren are very talented musicians and it was a joy to hear them sing and play in honor of their grandmother.  Marilyn and Lee Tippett, Lawrence Berg and Irene Iverson also attended from our area.

The Arrowhead Bookmobile will be in the Area on September 25th, October 16, November 6th and 27th and December 18th at Wright School yard from 1:15 – 1:45 PM and on Main Street in Cromwell from 2 – 2:45 PM.  If you haven’t been to the bookmobile lately, please give it a try.

It looked like the Cromwell Harvest Fest was a success this year.  There were lots of folks out enjoying the wonderful weather and conversation with friends.

The Class of 1957 also held their 50th Class Reunion, so I need to get some details.

Roger, how did the horseshoe tournament turn out?

It might be a little early, but the Annual Arts and Craft Sale will be held at the high school on Saturday, November 3rd.  Plan ahead now to get things ready so you can have a booth at the sale.  Just call Peggy Olson or Pauline Strand for more information.

Choir Practice has resumed at Bethany Lutheran on Mondays at 7 PM.  New members are always welcome to attend.  That reminds me of a story about choir practice.  Several years ago, Donna Lehti asked me to join the choir.  I said: “NO”.  She said:  “Why not?” And I answered back, “Because I don’t want to!” And she said:  “Oh, I guess that’s a good answer.” With my busy schedule, I just couldn’t add another thing at the time and I feel that I don’t sing that well anyway.

Congratulations are in order for Annie Lally Knutson as she has passed all her state tests to become a CPA.  I heard that she didn’t dare open the test results envelope for 10 days fearing that she didn’t pass, but once opened, Hooray!! She passed!  Her parents, Lindsay and Ray rushed right down to her home to help her and Lee celebrate.

There will be a Pork Loin Supper and all the trimmings at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Friday, September 28th starting at 4:30 PM to 7 PM.  This will be a Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Matching Funds Event.  There is also a home football game in Cromwell vs. Isle that evening, so come to the supper and go to the game with a full stomach.

This year’s first school Bus Bulletin came out last Friday, so here are a few announcements from it.  The bus Bulletins are also available in all area businesses.

Volleyball Parents night is scheduled for September 27th.  Parent’s Night for Football and Cross Country is scheduled for October 12th.

There are Football shirts and hats for sale in the high school office.  Stop in and sign up for them.

There are several backpacks with school supplies at the school that have been donated by the Employees of the Federal Woman’s Program at the Federal Prison Camp.  If you know of a student who needs a backpack, please stop in the school and let them know.

Well, I guess that’s all the news from Lake GreattohaveLoganback and Hello to all the volunteers at the Cromwell Annual Harvest Fest.  Please know that you are all appreciated!
