Wright - Cromwell News by Jennie K. Hanson February 25, 2008
This morning, February 24th, Bob and I got up at 4:30 AM to bring our son, Curtis to the Duluth Airport for his flight back to Hawaii. He had been home for a week that went by way too fast. We got a call at 12:45 PM saying that he just got to Mpls., which meant that he had had to wait in Duluth for 5 hours before leaving. I guess it was too foggy to fly out at his scheduled time of 7 AM. Anyway, I’m hoping he made some connecting flights and made it back to the balmy 70 to 80 degree temperatures of Honolulu sometime tonight, the 24th. I guess when you fly, you never know if you will fly on schedule. There are so many variables that can happen.
Spring is just around the corner and daffodils will be here before you know it. The Cromwell-Wright American Legion Auxiliary is taking orders for Daffodil Days for the American Cancer Society. Please contact Ann Heikkila or Carolyn Krogh to place your orders. The daffodils you order today will be arriving the week of March 10. A bunch of ten stems for a donation of $8 – all funds go to cancer victims and survivors. Add some spring to your home or office. Order now to ensure delivery. Thank you.
Last week I mistakenly said there was a Senior Dance at the Cromwell Park Pavilion, but it is actually this week on Thursday, February 28, from 1 – 4 Pm with Florien Chmielewski. Hope you all can be there.
Our sincere sympathy goes out to the family of little 23 month old, Navada Glenn Davidson, who died on February 19, 2008 in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN. A tragedy like this one is so hard to comprehend. So to his parents, Sara and Frank Davidson, brother Zach Tippett, grandparents, Leland and Marilyn Tippett, and Robert and Pat Beck and all other friends and relatives, we offer our love and prayers for you. May your memories of this dear little boy stay with you always. Navada’s Memorial Service was held at Bethany Lutheran church on Friday, February 22, 2008 with his uncle David Taplin officiating. Special music was provided by Mary Rose Varo, Aunt Suzanne Taplin, and cousin, Hannah Taplin.
“So, to all friends, old and new, at Bethany and Bethlehem churches, we can’t thank you enough for the tremendous support that held up our family through baby Navada Glenn Davidson’s memorial service on Friday. The prayers of those not present, and the presence of those who hugged us were the life-line we needed to get through this tragic experience. Many of you spoke of your own losses. Knowing the same devastation, we now know you better and we cry for your losses too. Thank you for the precious cards and personal messages, the many hot dishes, your gifts of money, your time and your comforting words that supported our helplessness.” : Much love and thanks from the families of Robbie and Pat Beck, Dale and Bill; Zach, Frank and Sara Davidson; David and Suzanne Taplin and children and Leland and Marilyn Tippett.
Long time Wright gentleman, Jasper Beseman, 85, died on February 16, 2008 at Miller-Dwan Hospital in Duluth, Mn. Jasper’s funeral was held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on February 20, 2008. Jasper was born on April 8, 1922 in Wright, Mn to Albert and Mary (Smuda) Beseman. He served in WWII in the Navy and was a veteran having served on the USS Wasp. Our nation’s WWII Veteran’s are dying at a huge rate, now. They say there are one thousand WWII veterans dying everyday in the USA. At this rate, there won’t be many left in a few years. We need to thank those we know and tell them how much we appreciate their service.
My son, Curtis, was telling me that there are more wounded veterans from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan than from the other wars combined in Veteran’s hospitals. I guess I can believe that, but not sure of these facts. These men and women also need our thanks and support.
Last weekend, we took our exchange sons to the Duluth Boat and Sports Show at the DECC. They were impressed with all the new boats, trailers and camping equipment, but I was surprised that we didn’t see a single tent! I wonder if people go camping with tents anymore? That always used to be so much fun when our kids were younger. Maybe we need to get back to the more basic camping and not have to spend thousands of dollars on big fancy rigs to have fun. And with the way gas is going up and up, maybe we will have to do our camping right in our own back yards!
Art Jauss was back in the hospital for a week, but will be home by the time you read this. Get well wishes go out to him as he recuperates for a couple of surgeries.
Get well wishes go out to Warren Oja, Lynn Groth, and Wally Schulke. All have been dealing with health related problems.
The Area Clothing Depot has been doing well even if the weather has been so cold. They were able to stay open all through the cold spell and now look forward to spring and all the spring donations. Please feel free to call us at 357-2385, if you have a load that needs dropped off and Bob will try to help you get your donations into the Depot. Summer items will be needed, too, but Please Remember – NO COMPUTERS as they have to pay to get rid of these items.
Can you believe that our high school seniors only have 3 months left of school? They graduate on May 23rd this year and school gets out on May 30th I think.
Speaking of school, here are a few announcements.
Award Winning Author, Linda Glaser, will visit our school on March 21st. She will talk to the students about being a writer and about her books. Also remember that students are required to be in school on March 21st as that is the make-up day for the cold weather day we had off in January.
Seniors need to turn in their graduation photos to Mrs. Brekke for the class photo in the hallways. So far only a few seniors have done this.
Next weeks JubiLent service will be at Bethany in Cromwell with “Hear By Faith” on Wednesday, March 5th. Soup supper at 6 Pm with service starting at 7PM. Also, Remember that Bill and Laurie Bastian will be in concert on March 12th at Bethany.
This week’s Trivia is about foods: What is Loco Moco? Its’s a Hawaiian dish of hamburger and eggs on rice with gravy. What food are Lady fingers? A dainty dessert of tiny sponge cakes. What are Leather Aprons? A chilly dessert of hot maple syrup poured over snow. What is Smearcase? Cottage cheese. And finally, what are Bangers? A meaty dish of sausages.
