I got an email from Betsy Benson Karkinen and she writes: “Life is good! I have lived in Hoyt Lakes since we moved in 1987. I’m married to Jim Karkinen. We have 2 children, Samantha who is a senior and Gus who is in 6th grade. They keep us busy running with sports and school events! We spend our free time (what little we have once Gus starts hockey J) in the outdoors. Jason and his wife Cheryl have a daughter, Chloe, who is in kindergarten. They also live in Hoyt Lakes. We just had a get-together with mom and dad for Matt’s 60th Birthday. They had just recently returned from a vacation to Branson, MO. They had a wonderful time!”

Have you ever been to Bentleyville? Well, if you haven’t, it’s a well worthwhile adventure to take with your family. Bentleyville is a Free Community Event at the corner of Crosby Rd and Morris Thomas Rd just east of HWY 33 North of Cloquet. There are over 600 lighted snowflakes, 1,200 amps of power are used to light it up, over 4,000 extension cords are used, and hundreds of lighting displays. There is also free hot chocolate, Apple Cider, and supplies for making som-mores. Santa is there from 5 – 10 PM every night they are open which is November 22 – Dec. 29th. Donations to the Salvation Army Food Shelf are encouraged and last year they collected over 9,000 pounds of food. Just go to http://www.bentleyvilleUSA.com for special programs and pictures.
Did you know that the Pandemic Flu of 1918 took more than 3 times as many lives as did World War I? There were 50 million deaths due to the flu compared to 16 million in the war. Over 12,000 died in Minnesota during this epidemic. This hit my family as my grandfather, Edwin Dahlman, died of the flu in November of 1918 after fighting the fires that went through the Cromwell area in October of 1918. I wonder how different things would have been if he had lived. I’m sure I wouldn’t be here writing this news if he had lived. I probably wouldn’t even have been born. Something to think about isn’t it??
