Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson August 31, 2005

As I sit down to right the news this week it is with a ton of mixed emotions.  I’ve been watching the coverage of the hurricane in Louisiana and can’t even imagine the problems that those people must be going through. How will all those homeless people rebuild their lives?  It seems a sign of the end times.  We must all pray for them and do whatever we can to help out.  The Red Cross will certainly need millions of dollars to help these people.

The weather forecasters tell us that the hurricane is bringing us our wonderful weather here in our area.  How can a hurricane bring so much damage and also nice weather in other parts of the country?  I almost feel guilty enjoying the nice weather here.

But life must go on and will go on as long as there are people and the will to live.

There are many, many of our young people heading off to colleges this week.

Then there will be hundreds of our kids heading to school this week, also.

Cromwell -Wright school opened its doors on September 1st with their regular schedule of events.

The first home football game will be held on Friday, September 9th at 7 PM. This is also the weekend of Cromwell’s Harvest Fest, so go to the Steak Fry and then go to the game afterwards.  There will also be all the regular schedule of events on the 10th and 11th.

Wayne Thom will be starting the MN Certified Trapping Education classes at his home beginning September 11, 2005 at 1 PM.  Classes will run for 5 Sundays.  Also, this year there will be a class just for girls.  The first class will be Co-ed.

The MN Legislature enacted the following law this year: “Effective March 1, 2007, a person born after December 31, 1989, who has not been issued a trapping license in the previous license year, may not obtain a trapping license without a trapper education certificate.  The Minnesota Trappers Association will conduct trapper education courses statewide, free of charge to participants, and issue certificates that satisfy this new trapping license requirement.” For more information and to register for the classes, call Wayne Thom at 218-644-3593.

The next meeting of the Carlton County Retired Educators (CCRE) will be at 3676 Music Camp Road, Hanging Horn Village on Little Hanging Horn Lake near Barnum, MN on Tuesday, September 13th at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM.  The gathering will include a French Cooked meal by Sue Jordan who was the first female student at the famous Maxine’s Restaurant in Paris, France.  This will be followed by a tour of the grounds and a short business meeting. Reservations are needed, so please call me at 357-2385 or Diane Lindstrom at 879-2528.  We will send you directions if needed.

And speaking of the Carlton County Retired Educators, we manned (and womaned) the Little Red Schoolhouse at the County Fair over the August 18 - 21st weekend.  We had hundreds of visitor’s come through the door and even had folks from Paris, France and Alaska.  A few asked about the history of the schoolhouse.  Well, that building was originally the Big Lake (Hanging Horn) Community Church on South County Road # 13 and Portage Road.  It was built in 1925.  It was a non-denominational church and community center dissolving in 1956 after which it was moved to the fair grounds.

The building restoration was made possible by the Carlton County Historical Society, the Retired Teachers of Carlton County and the Carlton County Fair Board.  School research is an on-going project by the Historical Society. If you have photographs, documents or artifacts to donate let the guides know at the fair or call me at my home.

Carlton County Schools provide the yearly artwork.  This year the Artwork came from the Moose Lake Elementary schools.

That’s all the news from Lake Havefunatharvestfest and Hello to all my readers.
