It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Sadie Smith Frericks on her recent award for 2005 Best Web Site of the year for the Voyageurs Press in McGregor. Sadie is one of my former 4th Graders and it is always great to see former student accomplish great things. By the way, Sadie is the only student that I ever had who not only memorized the presidents forward, but also backwards. I think I still have a cassette tape of her saying them backwards. Wow, what a memory even at the age of ten!

Are you a quilter? Well, if you are, come to quilting at the Bethlehem or Bethany Lutheran church. They make quilts for the needy and are in real need of more help. Quilting at Bethlehem in Wright is on Tuesdays from 9 - noon and in Cromwell at Bethany on Thursdays from 9 to noon. So, maybe you’re not a quilter! That doesn’t matter. They need people to tie the quilts together, or people who can donate quilting material or batting. Remember, with God’s help and your help, every quilt will do some good in the world.
A few weeks ago, a person was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Wright. Many have wondered who it was. Well, I found out that it was William Mahar. He was born and raised in Cromwell just off Dahlman and Krogh Road. I think he was the last of the 5 or 6 Mahar Boys.
Congratulations to Shirley Walli on her 80th Birthday. A party was held in her honor on February 12, 2006 at the Bethlehem Church in Wright from noon to 3 PM.
Yesterday, February 6th, I had the opportunity to substitute teach back in the 4th Grade at Cromwell School. It sure felt good to be back in 4th Grade where I taught for over 30 years. Can you believe that I have now been retired from teaching for 7 years? The time sure goes by fast when you are so busy and I still love teaching!
Missy and Scott Lind are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Macie. Macie was over 9 pounds at birth and sure is a cutie!
State Senator Becky Lowry will be at Ken Peterson’s on Saturday, February 18th from 1 - 3 PM for those of you who would like to take the time to chat with her. I’m sure she would appreciate hearing from the general public on the issues that affect our area and the state.
A Pool Tournament was held at Leonard Aho’s on Saturday, February 4th, 2006. A bunch of guys meet every Monday at Aho’s for Pool, conversation, a little ribbing, and lunch. They have tournaments a couple of times a year, too. This time Kris Kalli of Bloomington and Lincoln Hansen of Cromwell came in 1st Place. 2nd Place went to Bill Sorenson of Wright and Jim Rebrovich of Big Fork. 3rd Place went to Laird Hansen of Cromwell and Chet Thomas of Wright. 4th Place was Aaron Aho of Mpls. and Chuck Thomas of Wright. Leonard reports that the guys sure have a great time and also enjoy seeing their names in print.
A couple of weeks ago, I was giving the Children’s Sermon at our church in Wright when I asked the kids if anyone had ever called them a brat? My message was about how we should be Kind and Gentle to each other just as Jesus was. Well, one little fellow piped up, “ My mom did!” That sure brought the laughter from the congregation. I won’t embarrass anyone now, but it was one of the Children’s Sermons that will be remembered for a long time. So, I guess the moral of the story is to watch what we say to our kids. They sure hear us when we say the things we shouldn’t.
Another funny thing happened the other day to me, too. I was drinking a can of “Slim Fast” when my 8 year-old-granddaughter asked if she could have a can of “Slim Fat” too. Maybe she is right. The more I drink of it, the less I seem to lose. So, that’s why I call “Slim Fast” “Slim Slow”. It helps, but it seems pretty slow at working to lose weight. I guess you have to eat less and exercise more to make it work the way it should.
Have you done your taxes yet? I was just thinking that the IRS sure needs a lot of money when I noticed that if you put the word “THE” in front of “IRS” it becomes “THEIRS”. How Ironic?
Are you suffering from Cabin Fever? Well, no problem. Hop on the Arrowhead Transit Bus and head to Cloquet or Duluth. The Bus stops in Wright at the Co-op Store at 8:55 AM on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. You can also hop on at 9:10 AM at the Cromwell Citgo Station. You will arrive in Duluth at 10 AM and depart at 2 PM getting back to Cromwell or Wright at 3:00 or 3:30 PM. If you need more information, call 1-800-223-1850. Fares are $1.85 one way. The Bus will NOT stop at a location without a reservation, so call Edna Samuelson to reserve a seat.
There will be a First Communion Class at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on Tuesday, February 14th at 3:30 PM for all youth in 5th and 6th Grades or those who have not taken the class yet. A Valentine’s Party will follow the class. This is also the regular Youth Group Night for 5th and 6th graders.
Art Jauss Celebrated his 88th Birthday several times this month. His real birthday is on February 2nd, but the celebrations seemed to grow and grow. The first one was a surprise at the Wright Senior Citizen’s Meeting on February 1st and then another on at the Clothing Depot on The 4th. He’s the only guy I know that has had 166 birthday parties and is only 88 years old. Happy Birthday Art !! You deserve all the parties you can get.
Mary Dahlberg, Leo’s mother, celebrated her 94th Birthday on Sunday the 5th at Leo and Dolly’s.
That’s all the news from Lake Checkoutmywebsite and Hello to Kylee Smith, daughter of Dick and Terry Smith, who just broke the all time scoring record in Girl’s Basketball at the Cromwell-Wright School. The previous record holder was Julie Collman, daughter of June and Arnold Collman of Cromwell. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
