Where did last week go? I didn’t have my computer at home and that made it hard to get the news done, and my schedule with the children, school, etc. just about made it impossible to get a column written either, so I just didn’t get it done. Oh, well, I’m sure most of you understand.
There is a full schedule of Lenten Services in the area churches now that Lent has begun. This year, Easter comes about as late as it ever does; April 16th. I don’t know if you remember, but Easter always comes on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21st. It cannot come before March 22 or after April 25th.
The Women of Bethlehem Lutheran met for their general meeting on March 2nd.
Plans were made for the Annual Mother Daughter Tea on Saturday, May 13th at the church at 1:30 PM. This year’s guest speaker will be Mary Rose Varo.

The Lenten Service Schedule has been set for Bethany Lutheran, Bethlehem and the United Methodist Churches. On March 13th, at Bethany you can attend Magic with a Message, March 22nd at Bethlehem Sharrie Waldriff, and then on March 29th, Parading Puppets at Bethany. These services start with soup suppers at 5:45 PM with the programs starting at 6:30 PM. Children are encouraged to attend along with their parents and grandparents.
St. John’s is also having Services at their church in Wright during Lent. They hold them on Thursdays at 7 PM.
The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will be holding their Lenten Services on March 17th at 7 PM, April 17th at 7 PM, Monday, April 10th at 8:30 AM, Thursday, April 13th at 5:50 PM, Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 15 starting at 8:30 PM.
The 49th Homecoming King was crowned last Friday night at the Cromwell-Wright School. He is Rich Franko and the 59th Homecoming Queen was Kylee Smith. Last year’s Royalty, Gabe Goranson and Angel Pylka crowned Rich and Kylee.
Yes, there have been more Queens that Kings because they didn’t start having a King until 1958 when Dennis Korpela was crowned King. Do you know who the first Queen was in 1949? Well, she was Jean Heikkila. I don’t know much about her, but she was first.
I have a complete list of all the Kings and Queens if you are interested in knowing who they all are, and I will give that list to Judy Koivisto for the Cromwell Historical Club records.
The Township Elections are coming up on Tuesday, March 14th. You will have to check on your township to see where to vote.
The Tri-Community Food Shelf serving Cromwell, Tamarack, and Wright is participating in the largest state wide non perishable food and funds drive ("The March Campaign") during the month of March. There are colorful receptacles to deposit items in various locations in all three communities. The drive runs through March and April, so please donate generously and Thank You in advance.

The Clothing Depot in Wright has a complete list of donations for 2005. They have donated very generously in the past and 2005 was no exception. They gave $2100.00 this past year. The recipients were the Cromwell-Wright Title I, the Spanish Club Trip, the Post Prom, the Athletic Fund Raiser, the After School Program, the Wolf Ridge Trip, the State Football Trip, Dollars for Scholars, the Carlton Youth Shelter, the Tri -Community Food Shelf, the United Way of Carlton County, the Cromwell Fire Department, and the Shine 24/7 Youth Group. These donations could not have been made possible without the generous support of all the volunteer workers, patrons and donated items at the Clothing Depot. Please remember to donate items at this time, as supplies are getting down.
There will be a Science Fair at the school on Tuesday, March 14th from 3:30 - 6:30 PM. The PTA will be serving soup and salad during this event from 4 - 5:30 PM. Donations will be accepted to fund the 8th grade class to go on a Field Investigation to White Water State Park in April.
Grandparent’s Day will be held at the school on April 28th starting at 1:30 PM. This is a special day for the elementary students and their grandparents or their other favorite senior friends.
The Cub Scouts will be holding their Annual Blue and Gold Banquet on Thursday, March 16th at the Cromwell Park Pavilion from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.
There will be a WELCOME HOME Celebration for Robbie Larson and the Mowers Brothers (Seth, Trace and Trent) on Sunday, March 19th at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell at 11:30 AM. On August 8th, 2004 their families, friends and the community gathered to send them off to the war in Iraq. This celebration is to thank them for their service to our country and to Thank God for their safe return. If you still have the rock you got at that send off, bring it and share your thoughts about how you prayed for these guys while they were away. I know I kept my rock in my pocket and prayed for them every time I saw that rock. Now that they are safely back home, you can use that rock to remind you to pray for all the others serving in Iraq or in Harm’s Way.
Do you like to play BINGO? Well, you can at the St. Urho’s and St. Patrick’s Day BINGO at the Wright Senior Center on Saturday, March 18th, 7 - 9 PM.
Congratulations to Richard Smith, Jr. and Crystal Bailey on their recent engagement. They plan to be married on June 10, 2006 at the home of Richard’s parents of Wright.
And last but not least, look for the new design in the $10 bill. It will now have shades of orange, yellow and red on the front. This new bill will join the new colorized versions of the $20 and $50 bill as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing attempts to stay ahead of counterfeiters and the ever more sophisticated copying machines. The new $10 bill still features Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Treasury secretary, on one side, and the Treasury building on the other side. You will also see an image of the Statue of Liberty’s Torch and “We the People” in red along with small yellow 10s and a subtle orange background. There are no plans to colorize the $1 bill which accounts for about 45% of all the bills printed or the $5 bill.
That’s all the news from Lake Remembertovotemarch14 and Hello to all the former Homecoming Kings and Queens.
