Wright News by March 14, 2006

I got a call from Avis Tillman the other day and she gave me a lot of information on Cromwell High School’s first Homecoming Queen, Jean Heikkila.  That was in 1948.  Jean was her cousin and was the daughter of Art and Elvira Heikkila.  Her sister was Gloria Beatty.  Since Jean had Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair, the boys and some of the girls in her class had to help carry her up and down the many flights of steps in the old Cromwell School to get to her classes.  My Dad, Wallace Dahlman, was her bus driver for a time and also had to carry her on and off the bus.  There were no handicap lifts in those days. She had been trained in Accounting, was a Licensed Ham Radio Operator, and was a talented artist, too.  Jean was married to Orvin Fingarson, but he died after only a year since he also had MD.  Jean was born in 1929 and died in 1976 at 46 years of age.  She is buried in the Eagle Lake Cemetery five or six miles south of Cromwell.

I got a card from Beverly Krall and she has been suffering with pneumonia.  Bev and her husband Tony came up to Eagle Lake in the summers for over 30 years.  It will be 6 years in October now since they sold their cabin.  We still miss the Krall’s on Eagle Lake and around the area.

Tony and Bev also spent three weeks in Destin, Florida this winter.  They just returned on February 2nd.  They rented a Condo on the Gulf and their children and her brother and wife came for a week’s visit, too.  It was their grandchildren’s first time on a plane, so they all had a grand old time while together.

I guess Easter isn’t too far away.  The school kids and staff will have a very nice extended Spring Break.  They will have NO SCHOOL from April 8th - 17th.
Mark your calendars for Friday, March 24th, as that is Family Movie Night at Bethany in Cromwell.  They will be watching the movie, “Luther” at 7 PM.
The Princeton Bantam Hockey Team is going to the State Tournament for the 1st time on starting on March 17th.  Two of Dick and Sue (Stone) Randa’s Grandsons, Sam and Ryne Grove are playing on that team.  Their son-in-law, Sean Miller is the coach of the team, too.

Congratulations to Beth Clark and the Hermantown Girls Basketball Team on their recent win over Hibbing and a trip to the State Tournament in Mpls.  There was only .3 of a second left in the game when the Hibbing team stormed the court not realizing the game wasn’t over yet.  A technical foul was called on them and Hermantown’s Anna Bjorlin sank both free throws and sent the game into overtime.  The Hawks prevailed and won the game 79 - 78 in the Section 7AAA finals at Duluth Denfeld on Thursday, March 9, 2006.  We all are very proud of Coach Clark who is a Cromwell High School Graduate.
Beth Clark was also on the girl’s basketball team that started up in the 1970’s. She was a starter on that team in the 7th grade.

I’d like to thank everyone who donated disposable diapers for the Carlton Crisis Shelter in Cloquet during the month of February.  There were a total of 14 packages and that equaled 664 diapers in all.  Donations will still be excepted at the church if you want to donate.

Lillia Jean Jordan is the newest member of the Jesse and Crystal Jordan family of Wright.  They also have a son, Wyatt and daughter Grace.

Jeremiah Bergland received his high school diploma at the school a few weeks ago.  Congratulations, Jeremiah.  We knew you would do it.

The Carlton County Retired Educators will meet at Gampers in Moose Lake on Tuesday, April 25th at noon.  (Note the date change) Jerry DeRungs, owner of the Moose Lake Star Gazette will be the guest speaker.  New members and newly retired are always welcome to attend.

The Annual Mother Daughter Tea and Luncheon will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright on Saturday, May 13th at 1:30 PM.  Guest speaker this year will be Mary Rose Varo of Cromwell.  Plan to attend.

That’s all the news from Lake Changeyoursmokealarmbatteries and Hello to all the girls and boys basketball players.  Especially those from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s.
