Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson March 19, 2007

Hi, we made it through another week and things sure seemed to go well.

I want to thank the members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River and Faith Lutheran in rural Sturgeon Lake for the warm welcome they afforded me last Sunday.  I was asked to do the service at both churches and I really enjoyed it.  It was also great to hear the Bethany Choir from Cromwell at Holy Trinity as they were invited to sing there, too.  I guess I was really “Preaching to the choir” in Kettle River.  Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome!

The Benefit for the Varo Family was a big success and the Varo family and all the volunteers want to thank everyone who helped and/or donated in any way.  You are all appreciated!

It was great to see Mike Nobis and his family there also.  The Chili Feed Benefit for Mike will be held at the Pavilion in Cromwell on Saturday, March 31st from 4 PM – 7 PM.  Donations for the Silent Auction can be dropped of at the Country Inn.  Volunteers are also needed so let Rick know as soon as possible if you can help out.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Roxanne Norton, 48, who died in her home in Wright on March 15, 2007.  Roxanne was a very dedicated volunteer and past board member of the Area Clothing Depot in Wright.  She leaves her friend and partner, Dwaine Bruschu of Wright, and her 3 sons, LeRoy, Leo, and Elmer Norton of Maine.  An informal gathering to remember Roxanne will be held later at Dwaine’s home.

Our sympathy is extended to Paul Groth on the death of his 2nd wife, Lisa Ann Beyer Groth, age 32, on Friday, March 9, 2007.  Paul’s first wife also died.  Lisa was born in 1971 and was a nurse at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN, Hospice nurse for the St. Cloud Hospital, and most recently she was working as a nursing coordinator for REM in St. Cloud.  Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake, MN.  Cards can be sent to Paul in care of Mark Groth, Wright, MN 55798, or email dingmanfuneralhomes.com

Madelyn Adelsgruber wants to publicly thank the “Snow Angel” for plowing out her driveway and even shoveling her walk while she was gone south.  It was a very wonderful surprise to come home and not have to struggle with all the snow we have had lately.

A Pool tournament will be held at Leonard Aho’s on March 24th for most of the day.  The Monday Pool gang will be hanging it up for another year and this is the last tournament of the year.  The guys and spouses will he having a Pool Breakfast soon after the season ends.

The Carlton County Retired Educators will be meeting at the Cromwell – Wright School on April 10th for their first meeting of the year.  More details later.

The Cromwell-Wright American Legion Auxiliary will meet on Monday, April 9 (the original scheduled date) at the Cromwell Pavilion.  Please come prepared to complete our annual reports and bring along your volunteer hour worksheets.  If you cannot attend, please mail your worksheets in advance to Ann Heikkila.  Hope to see you there!

A huge “Thank You” to everyone who participated in the Cromwell-Wright Daffodil Days!  Whether you volunteered your precious time or made a donation, the American Cancer Society thanks you.  Your monies will go to cancer research and prevention in addition to survivor services; and we got an early taste of spring with the beautiful yellow blossoms of hope. Mrs. Wester, science teacher, is asking for shoe boxes.  All sizes, tops or no tops.  Just drop them off at the school.

The 2nd Graders at school are collecting food for their annual March Food Drive.  Give the food to an area student or drop it off at the school. Let’s help them do something good for the benefit of our community. The Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell has a new email address.  It is if you need to leave a message.

I’m sure there will be a huge turn-out for the Bill and Lori Bastion Concert at Bethany on March 28th, so be there early and enjoy the soup supper at 6 PM.  Not too many Lenten services left now, so try to come to this one if you can.

I was lucky enough to see two Trumpeter Swans last month.  They were headed east from around the Jeff Suhonen home.  What a sight.  Trumpeter Swans have a wing-span of 8 feet, so they are truly majestic birds. The Lake Country Power Association will be holding their Annual Meeting in the Reif Center in Grand Rapids on April 21st.  Dan Smith, current director, is up for election and there are 2 other guys running for board director. They are Frank Turnock and John Manninen.  Watch your mail as the election takes place by mail or you can bring your ballot to the meeting on the 21st. The teachers, students and staff spent most of March 9th reading.  This was Read Across America Day at the school, which coincides with the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.  Students were encouraged to bring their favorite books to school and they were welcomed to wear their pajamas in honor of Dr. Seuss.  Reading to a child is one of the most important things you can do to raise a successful reader.  And the more that children read for fun, the better they do in school.

Several youth from school attended the Young Authors Young Artists conference held in Virginia, Mn on March15th.  This was an all day conference with a keynote speaker and 3 break out sessions of their choice.

The Annual Title I Family Night will be held at the school on March 29th from 5 – 7 PM.  There will be a dinner in the lunchroom from 5 – 5:45 PM and then Storyteller/Musician, Jack Pearson, The Song Strummin’ Storyman, in the auditorium from 5:45 – 6:30 and finally Drawing Fun with the Barnharts in the Art Room from 6:30 – 7:15 PM.  The Barnharts will teach you how to draw cartoon characters and make a cartoon flip book.  Sounds like a lot of fun to me.  If your kids are in Title I and you haven’t gotten a registration form, please call the school and ask for Sandi Gervais or dial her extension at 4132.

The next Senior Dance is on the 22nd at the Pavilion in Cromwell.  1 – 4 PM. Loren Lindevig will provide the music.

Get well wishes go out to Wayne Lind who suffered a stroke and to Carol Stenson Campion who fell on the ice and broke her neck.

Does anyone know where you can buy ladies handkerchiefs?  I have a friend who would like some new ones and they are very hard to find.  Maybe someone could even make some for her.  Just let me know, thanks.

Bible Verse:  Greater love has no one than this, to lay down his life for his friends. John 15: 13

This week’s Trivia:  Did you ever hear the expression “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”?  For pink flamingos, this is especially true.  Flamingos are born white.  They acquire their pink color by eating shrimp, plankton, and other foods that contain carotenoids (pigments found in plants and animals).  As handlers at the Philadelphia Zoo have learned, even carrots leave flamingos “in the pink.”

Household Hint:  Tired of picking up all those little toys like legos?  Put down a queen or king size flat sheet before the kids play with tiny toys. Then at clean up time, just pick up the four corners of the sheet and dump them back in the containers.  I’ve used this trick for years and I think I even invented it for my 3 sons years ago.  There’s nothing worse in the morning then stepping on a lego in your bare feet.  Ouch!

I’d like to end the news this week with an old Irish Poem.

May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rain fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand. I should have put this in last week for St. Patrick’s Day, but I ran out of room.

That’s all the news from Lake Welcomehomesnowbirds and “Hello” to all the volunteers in the area.  Thanks for all your help!
