Wright News by Jennie K. Hanson May 7, 2007

It seems that every week we get news of someone in the hospital or dying. I guess that’s the way things go, but it seems unusually frequent lately. Walter Hakala, SR has been in the hospital and so has little 2 month old Tucker Korpi, son of Bert and Theresa Korpi.  We pray for them both.

Long time resident, Russ Hart was laid to rest on May 1, 2007 in the Wright Public Cemetery.  His funeral was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Koopman officiating.  His only surviving sibling, Judy VonDeLinde, sang for her brother accompanied by Karen Reid.

Please don’t forget the Mother Daughter Tea on Saturday, May 12th at 1:30 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Brandon Burns received his pilot wings, flying the K-C-135 Tanker at Fairchild Air force Base in Washington after a TDY.  Chris is getting papers ready for a trip of a life-time.  Where?  Surprise!!

Kari Heikkila us closing out her high days as an honor student from a class of 326 students at Bemidji a year ahead of schedule.  She is writing her graduation speech and has already been accepted at Dartmouth or Carthage Private Christian College.  She hasn’t made this important decision yet. She will be majoring in neuro-science research.  An Open House Graduation Party will be held for Kari on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright from 1 – 3 PM.

The Forest Hill Cemetery Association of Cromwell will have their clean-up day, this Friday, May 11 beginning at 9:30 a.m.  In case of rain, we will postpone until Saturday, May 12.  Many hands make the work light.  Please come and join us if your schedule will allow.

Cemetery Clean-up took place at the Wright Public Cemetery on the 5th.  They are getting a new sign and will also schedule another work day as there is a lot to do yet.

A wonderful Guitar Recital was held at the school on Thursday, May 3, 2007. Mary Rose Varo has been giving guitar lessons over the past 6 months and this was a culmination of what the students have learded so far.  Those participating were Lindsay Anthony, Devon Egge, Tristan Johnson, Alex Kropp, Erika Kosloski, Tyler Randall, Abbey Schleret, Samantha Suhonen, Quinlan Warner, and Emily, Olivia and Eli Warpula.  There were several group numbers as well as individuals and small groups.  The hit of the show was a new version of The Itsy Bitsy Spider by Alex and Eli and the whole group doing Folsum Prison Blues in the Johnny Cash style.  That means they all wore sunglasses and had a dollar bill under the strings for a special affect.  It was great.

Graduation is just a couple of weeks away now on May 25th.  Baccalaureate is on the 13th at Bethany in Cromwell at 10:30 AM.

There are two openings at the school for next year.  They are for “Secretary/Receptionist, and “Library Media Assistant.  Call the school or stop in for more information.

The school will also be hosting a Fine Arts Night/ Music Concert on Wednesday, May 16th at 7 PM.  This is your chance to see and hear our students’ best work.

The Senior Awards Banquet will be on May 18th.

THE LAST DAY OF THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM WILL BE ON MAY 24TH!

There will be a Cub Scout Scout pancake breakfast on Mother’s Day in the Cromwell Park Pavilion 7:30 to 11:30 AM Then, the Boy Scouts will be doing a car wash, selling carnations and roses, selling Rustic Cedar Planters and having a Bake Sale from 12:00PM until 5:00PM at the Cromwell fire hall.  On that same day, May 12th. This is the Third Annual Rose Sale for the scouts and the Flowers have been of exceptional quality.  Roses go for $1.50 each, $6.50 per half dozen, and $12.00 for a dozen.  The Carnations are $1.00 for a single, $5.50 per half dozen, and $10.00 for a dozen.  The car wash is a “free will” donation.  The baked goods will be pre-priced.

Minnesota Trivia:  International Falls is known as “Minnesota’s Ice-box”. Rochester, Mn is the home of a water tower shaped like a corn cob. Minnehaha Falls was also known as Little Falls and Brown Falls.  Lake Itasca is famous for being the headwaters of the Mississippi River.  (Also a great one-day trip for us living here in the Cromwell-Wright Area).

Bible Verse for the Week:  I give you a new commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you, you should also love one another.  John 13: 34 (Notice Jesus said it twice, He must have really meant it!) Helpful Hint: Tick Removal

A School Nurse has written the following information and it’s supposed to work.  This is great, because it works in those places where it’s sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.  Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it’s own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.  This technique has works every time, and it’s much less traumatic for the patient and easier. Unless someone is allergic to soap, this shouldn’t be damaging in any way.

That’s all the news for this week from Lake Elizabeth.  Yes, My Mother-in-law, Elizabeth Hanson turned 90 on May 9th.  Wow, that’s great. And Hello to all the residents at the Villa Vista, too.  If you have time, please send her a card.  The address is Elizabeth Hanson, 1197 Villa Vista Circle, Cromwell, Mn 55726.  Thanks, JKH
